Have a foal that has been well handled in the field, stroked all over, picks feet up, let me wrap my arms around etc etc. However he is petrified of the rope and will no way let me get the headcollar on. Have let him sniff the headcollar over the past few weeks, have taken everything really slowly. Has been in the stable when attempted the headcollar. Have never had such problems with any other foals. Without pinning him to the corner of the stable any body had same trouble and any suggestions?

hmm tricky one... show him rope and then give treat maybe? Keep at it im sure you're doing everything right... sorry i cant be of more help hope someone on here has the answer for you!

Thanks for your reply, have tried the rope for the last 2 months and we are getting no where nearer. My vet has told me he has serious attitude, he is not just being a normal foal, she want to get his nads off a.s.a.p..

Vet assures me it is the foals attitude not my handling. management

Can you drape the rope over a feed bucket and let him eat out of it? If he starts to associate it with food....well might be worth a try.

Hi, tried that, its like he is so cunning and wise. I cant believe im having such problems with him, its bloody laughable, he is only a bloody pony foal. arggg

Just out of interest:
What colour are the headcollar and rope?
Have you had his eyes tested? Just wondered if it's his eyesight which might be affecting him when the rope or headcollar comes near his head??
Have you tried putting the headcollar on and off whilst in the stable? My new foal is little head shy but he hasn't had the handling of my homebred, he's already coming around somewhat for a good scratch!!
Just trying to think of possible reasons??? Good luck.

When I bought my colt he was 10 months old and had never been handled by people! I had to herd him into the trailer! I put the noseband part through on my arm and started to stroke his nose, once he was use to me touching him, I kept my hand firmly in place, whipped it over my hand and fastened it like that. I didn't bother with a lead rope for a couple of weeks. Hope this helps xx
