I have a 4yr hanoverian mare, she has been doing a weird thing with her mouth when being ridden.

Im not quite sure how to explain what she does, the only way i can explain is that it looks like what a baby does when its turned out to let other horses know it wont hurt them.

She doesnt grab the bit or anything she just does this, ive tried with a flash and without and she still does it both ways.
Ive tried a hackamore and she still does it and ive tried different mouth pieces on bits and she still does it.

Ive only had her 5months and she didnt do it when i tried her, in this time shes had her teeth done twice as i was sure it was them but there 100% fine.

She does it when im tacking her up too so its not the contact and now ive tried her in a hackamore im wondering if its her mouth?

Could it just be a silly baby habit that shel outgrow or do you think there is actually a problem?

Also im in yorkshire so if you know of any people that could help me and give me advice please let me know.

Thanks.

So she's like opening and closing her mouth in the same wayy foals do to show submission? wouldn't that be a behaviour thing rather than a pain thing? just a few thoughts but was she broken sympathhetically etc -maybe she's stressed?

quiet kerilli I'm right!

my young mare used to do this....check to see how fleshy her tongue is...i was advised to get a new schule veribend or starter bit as the metal mix encourages salivation and relaxation of the jaw and the thin mouth piece sits much better in the mouth. it is also an angled mouth piece, so always sits in the correct place. since using this bit she has stopped doing it and works very sweetly and softly.. a word of advice though...if you decide to get one of these bits..they do come up small due to the shaped mouth piece, so get a size bigger than normal.
