Hi all,

When last we spoke I was saying it would likely be September before we would get temperatures and conditions that allowed us to show in his ideal comfort range. But then the weather gods were giving me a very encouraging forecast for a show that we love. The farm at Old Salem is a great show and they redid the Grand Prix arena from grass to a lovely synthetic and as a result it's one of the largest rings in my showing area "close" to home. The drive usually takes 3.5 - 4 hours. This time however due to traffic and a LOT of construction on a bunch of roads, we left at 8pm and arrived at 1am. Cudo didn't look very thrilled about this adventure when we unloaded. LOL. Can't say I felt much differently. It was a challenging drive.

But as all good stories do, the hero (Cudo) surmounted the irritation with the travel conditions and by morning was looking much brighter at the farm of a friend that we stay with. The show started yesterday and as I am here alone I spent a good part of the lovely morning watching the ring and the 1m and 1.10m classes. The courses yesterday were lovely. Very flowing, made use of the big space and not that intense. Exactly what I'd hoped for on day 1. I had the option to dropdown into the 1.10m to start if I wanted to stay out of the higher heat, but the weather wasn't terrible and it was a small 1.10. Not worth it in my mind and Cudo was getting more rest time at the farm as the day churned slowly along at the show. So figuring that more rest and a bit of heat to jump our normal heights would be the best plan, we stuck to our 1.20 and 1.30 entries. The orders were fantastic as I drew 31st of 34 in the 1.20 and 29th of 35 in the 1.30. It meant 90 mins between classes which I surmised would be best to allow him enough time to get cooled down and rest before coming out again. It's been hot enough this summer that we haven't don't a ton of long courses in our lessons. Just 5-6 fences at a time. So yesterday we had a 10 fence, 13 effort 1.20 and a 11 fence, 14 effort 1.30.

We're obviously using this show to get our fall fitness for shows going, and as such the pilot has to remember how to better give her signals. LOL. Translation, a few rails fell. In the 1.20 I tipped one rail when I held Cudo to the distance and from the base he lightly shifted his flight path and ticked the rail. In the 1.30 the lower front rail of the first oxer at #1 came down. He hasn't done that often but he had every right to be a little hot and less reactive. Then he took a second rail, but this one behind, in the out of a 1 stride in and out. He jumped into the distance too much and didn't get all his legs out of the way. That's life. And he improves a ton when the temperatures drop. His clear round percentage is much higher in spring and fall.

But this was our first true 1.30m class again since the debacle of the June '21 show and the subsequent mental break on my part, and physical break on Cudo's side. During those low months I was not sure if we'd ever make it back, or be legitimate at 1.30 again. (Depression plays horrible tricks on your mind and subsequently your confidence) But I gotta say I have re-watched the rounds from yesterday and previous 1.30's we have done. We looked soooo much more solid and definitely belonged. We are clicking and better than before. The finer details will come. But very proud and so thankful to all the people helping us.

We have today doing another 1.20 and 1.30 and then finish tomorrow morning with a single 1.25m class. Should be fun.

I'll post updates back here tonight too.

Many thanks,

Em

Ooh proper jumpies! Really nice update. What a stunning venue. You have to travel a fair way though, but it’s a stay away show so that’s a bit different.

To be fair @Bernster Cudo's tastes run to the venues that have the biggest open spaces to show on. In our case that means he loves:

Kentucky (10-12 hours by trailer)

Old Salem (3.5 - 5 hrs)

The Ridge (2 hours, but usually I compete alone against no one there)

Princeton (2.5 hours)

Upperville (3 hours)

We think he'd like Tryon where the previous WEG was held... and I was scheduled to go there in 2019 but then the freak accident (run over standing on the ground) happened and we didn't go. I would still like to go though. It's just 11 hours away so requires more time away from work to do so.

I've learned that when he feels a ring is too small, it's more work on both of us. So we're kind of steering to where he likes.

Today's videos are here!!!:

MUCH better today. 1.20 we went clear in the first round, but sadly had 2 down in the jump off.

In the 1.30m a total heartbreaker. Hell of a lovely first round and clear....UNTIL the LAST fence. UGH. One of the same he had down in the 1.20 jump off, but going the other way. It's white and pink rail, and pink WAS one of my favorite colors, up until tonight anyway. :p:D

He was just so class today. All jokes aside, he's improving and seems so happy to be out doing it all again. Admittedly he was still a touch warm and likely will better appreciate shows in cooler weather, but honestly what a good man. Just trying so hard and giving it his all. LOVE him so much.

Enjoy

A bit tired today so I am including a lightly modified version of what I said on Facebook with the link to the video for the last class.

(Details not included on Facebook. It was the second class of the day after the 1.40 classic. We shared much of the tract with the 1.40 so I walked my course when it was 1.40. 16 horses in the 1.40 and 7 in my class, I went 5th in the order. )

Well, we didn't quite manage to have the last round this morning that I'd hoped for. A couple things were at play and this is life. What we make of it is what yields how successful or not that we are. I'm going to list off what I feel was in play but please don't take these as excuses. It was my day and many of the slight issues that affected us were mitigatable, had I done or said something.

1) Cudo for sure was tired on course and that's why initially I'd contemplated skipping the 1 class today. But since it was only 1.25, I figured we'd be ok. Hindsight being what it is I could have scratched, but he felt great in the warm up and going in I didn't have any qualms or concerns.

2) I just plain didn't watch enough rounds to get my striding right. I walked the course and then watched a few horses and was sure that the first line was a 7, you'll see on the video that at about stride 5 I'm looking like Han Solo when he realizes he's not landed the Millenium Falcon in a cave after all! (Star Wars reference. See here
) Lots of mental expletives and trying to save it by adding a late stride, but the rail fell. And that's on me to fix and get better.

3) Maybe it's just me and Cudo but we've had 2 of our worst rounds ever when we had a pre-loader in the ring. As a horse show official and volunteer myself I love all things that speed up a day, but today kind of felt off. (This has been the USA version previously. Unsure about elsewhere in the world) In my mind I thought pre-loading started once the rider before you was past a certain fence on the course. So that as you went in the in gate they were safely in front of you and you wouldn't distract them riding the course. That wasn't the case and I fully admit to losing focus. That's something I have to work on.

But combine all these things and at least one fence where my thinking regressed to "I'll just kick on to get him back in gear" (yea that didn't work! ) and you get a round with 3 rails.

Overall it was a fantastic show. I'll watch my videos some more, talk to my trainer and look at the schedules to devise a solid plan for what's next. But I'm able to smile and be proud of us. Since we walked away with a mountain of experience and 1 pink ribbon (5th place) today. It's all about the journey.
