SUMMER COPD/POLLEN ALLERGY- getting really urgent.

Does anyone have any idea's please or experience/site recommendations etc- ANYTHING???

I look after a pony for a lady who just couldnt give a damn, have sorted out all her problems to date severe mud fever rain scald etc.
I have not idea on this one though, winter coughs i can handle with dust free regime but this pony is 100% in winter.

I am presently trying secreta pro after speaking to my vet as i really cant afford ventipulmin for someone elses horse (i would if i could but am struggling with affording my own right now)

We tried a nosenet for ridden work- she needs exercise as when she is fit the symptoms are slightly better apparently and she is fat!

Just stood in the field she is wheezing and ridden she is coughing badly- i think she is going to end up having to be retired but she actually loves to be ridden.

Is there anything else i can do to make her life easier without spending a fortune? (i feel guilty writing that!)

The Naff stuff is meant to be good: they do a £ back guarantee - I don't know how much it is though.

Also, do you ride in a nose net? They work pretty well. I think folks have suggested vaseline just inside the opening of the nostrils as well.

Because of the size of the horses lungs it takes quite a lot to make them cough compared to humans. If she is wheezing just stood in the field and coughing then im sorry to say (for you) that she needs the vet. She may need steroids and/or antibiotics. Herbs may help (marshmallow and aniseed are good for getting rid of mucus, nettle you can pick from the hedge is a source of antioxidants) but the pony really needs veterinary help.

Now for my not so polite reply- the bl**dy owner should be shot. People like that really **** me off

Hi - yes tried a nosenet, it didnt make a lot of difference to be honest.
I think as she is bad in the field its more than making her comfortable to be ridden.
Will look up the Naff stuff though- thanks
 
My friends pony also suffers from pollen allergy. She has mixed pollen made up by the chemsit. its been invaluble for him
 
teddyt- thanks thats what i'm afraid of- i have had a vet look at her but i think she has become worse since, he is the one that said ventipulmin, Sectreta pro is apparently very similar just not as strong and half the price- its still prooving pricey!- I will ask vets about antibiotics as she was coughing badly this evening
 
Try adding local honey to feed. It works the same for humans by introducing the local pollens. it should work fairly quickly i think, may be worth a go? It has to be local stuff tho, not shop bought.
 
Just had a look and yes thats cheaper than my vet sells in for.
How long approx do you think a tub will last a pony? she is about 13.3/14hh

I wouldnt feed her honey. Firstly, it is obviously very sweet and if she is fat she shouldnt have any extra sugar. Secondly, some researchers think it is an old wives tale and doesnt actually do anything. When it is recomended it is advised to start taking it before the hayfever season starts, in order to build up immunity/resistance to the pollen, so its a bit late now. Also if the horse is already showing signs of a possible allergic reaction, the last thing you want to do is give it more of the thing that it could be allergic to!
 
I can really recommend Global Herbs for this kind of problem - they have summer specific products for breathing - have a look at their website, if you don't have a stocist close they will post it to you
 
I use Nosrilvet with good results so far. It costs around £30 for 2 little puffer bottles and lasts around a month.
 
Winergy Ventilate is superb, many vets recommend it including my 2 equine vets. No loading dose needed, works fairly quickly and isn't as expensive as Ventipulmin which can have quirky side effects in smaller ponies i found to my detriment....... and the bonus is that almost all horses/ponies will eat it from the hand as it's a tad tasty so i'm reliably told from my 4 legged friends who ransacked my feed room last yr for it.............
 
global herbs pollen X! i really recomend it, they have vets that u can ring and they can advice u on what else u can give as you can mix them for the best results.
