I'm a non owner thinking about trying hunting (next season now). Would like to get a bit more jumping experience and just general stamina under my belt during the summer. Does anyone who offers hunt hirelings in my area (West/North Yorkshire), make them available during the summer for rides out/training etc? The riding school I use does offer hacking and jumping etc but I don't think i'm getting a real feel of a true 'hunting' experience.

The hireling yard that I use down here was keen for me to ride out a couple of times before I went hunting with them so they could see what I was like in the saddle and so I could get to know my horse.

I know you would probably prefer to stay nearer home but here are two options you might like to consider:

http://www.winchesterridingclub.co.uk/documents/RAHClinicOct09.pdf - this has become an annual weekend and includes cross country training, hunt etiquette and a morning hunting with the Royal Artillery Hunt. Mrs Grob is still the main contact and could probably give you more info for 2011 course.

whereabout are you caileag? I know a number of yards that run hirelings appreciate people taking the horses out either right after season ends as they rough them off, or during the fitenning process - so that might be the time to try to get some lessons and cross country experience under your belt before going hunting.

the other thing, is that most hunts have a non jumping group if you don't want to/can't/won't/arent' happy to jump... :D

maybe contact the Badsworth and Bramham moor hunt who can put you in touch with the lady who does their hirelings (can't for the life of me remember her name now) and even if she can't help then she'd be able to put you in touch with someone who can!
