I have a 10 year old dutch warmblood mare. In the winter she doesn't grow much of a coat so very rarely need to clip her. She has 3 white socks and goes out ( well rugged) every day on a clay soil paddock for approximately 9 hours come rain or shine. I plaster her heels in Equimins udder cream and cold hose the mud of every eve when she come in. I then either towel dry her legs or leave to dry naturally in a nice deep bed. She never has the slightest problem with cracked heels or mud fever using this method.
Last night was the first night that she was turned out 24/7, hopefully now untill the end of October BUT this morning when I brought her in one of her hind legs with the white sock was covered in crusty sore patches! This happens every summer with her. She suffers almost from a summer ' mud fever' related problem.
I washed and dried her legs and applied her special cream that she has for this problem but I can;t believe it's come on so quickly. She also has a huge white blaze down her face and suffers from sunburn and or a buttercup allergy. Her nose becomes very sore, blisters and peels if I do not keep it covered with a mask or various creams and potions.
Has any body else experienced this sort of problem with their horses? I know how to manage her problem now and fortunatley good old udder cream or sudocram does the trick but I am wondering if her lying in the damp from the field may trigger off her problem? Anyway I'm on the case and while I'm at it will dig out the fly mask before the horrid little buggers give her conjunctivitis!
