because the horse cuts himself on the fetlocks and its not healing because he keeps knocking himself! therefore we need to protect him because he is very active in the field!

Aah so you need serious lower leg protection. Have you looked at some of the products the western type riders have as they might allow a bit more breathability than the sort of things we use for avoiding mud in the winter.

Not that I know anything about western but isnt there something called a 'skid boot' which the barrel racer types use?

His legs would sweat up in Hardy Chaps. They are thick neoprene. Close contact chaps would be better as they have pimples to keep the legs cooler, but I wouldn't really want to use them in summer. I see your predicament though. Equilibrium also do summer chaps but they don't look like they would stay on a normal horse 5 minutes.

I have the same problem with my horse. Got fed up with treating permanent wounds on the front of his legs. So I've now bought him a pair of the white flex n stretch training wraps. They're made of breathable stomatex and I was recommended them as they allow the skin to breathe and with being white they'll reflect the heat. I'm going to start turning mine out at night soon so it'll be cooler. Can't say if they work yet as this is the first time I've tried them but didn't like the idea of him wearing hot neoprene boots.

Would be intereste dto hear if anyone has used the summer turn out boots. I have the same problem with my youngster. Hes the only horse I know that can be in a field on his own and get kicked.....by himself! Currently using the equichaps but agree, he is beginning to sweat, plus they don't offer that much protection. He came in only this week with a great big scrape down his cannon bone! I have purchased the strech and flex wraps and wa plannong on using these but open to any ideas. He has them on for 12 hours so musn't sweat. Last year I turned him out in normal boots and he got what I would call 'party feet'. You know, where you stand around in really high heels for ages and the balls of your feet sweat and end up stinging like mad. Poor sod!

The stretch and flex wraps are the same Stomatex material as Equichaps Close Contact Chaps, which I have found to be very strong. The Hardy chaps, don't be fooled by the name, aren't hardy at all. My horse demolished a pair within 20 minutes of putting them on for the first time. They are half the price of Close Contact chaps, which is a bit of a clue.

The suggestion to use the white training wraps sounds good to me.
