can anyone recomend a summer turnout rug that is actually waterproof? everyone i know is having terrible trouble with their summer turnout rugs not being water proof enough. in our yard today there are 5 horses standing in cause their rugs leeked over night and they were shivering this morning. we don't want to have to put winter rugs on at this time of year incase they are too warm. seems silly putting winter weight rugs on when its nearly july!

Most summer turnouts are only 600 denier, you need one that is 1200 really to ensure your horse stays dry.

The Amigo lightweight turnout (not the summer one) is 1200 denier, as are some of the WB ones.

Definately get the Amigo one. Its been brilliant, one of mine (a TB woose!) lives in his most of the summer (due to our crappy weather...!) and its only leaked once when it really was torrential rain. Otherwise its excellent. Fits perfectly, never slips even though it doesnt have hind leg straps which worried me at first. And its very lightweight so they dont get too hot at all.

But make SURE its the right Amigo. There's 2 summer type ones which is very confusing. I think the 600 denier ones come in pretty pastel colours whereas the 1200 denier (best ones) are just navy.

I agree with that. I have a Shires one that is 1200, and its the only lw thats ever kept him dry.

I got a bucus sunshower, which is waterproof.......... but not a good fit on my HIGH withered TB. The string vest type lining rubbed his withers and it always wants to slip back on him. It would be good on a horse which it fitted though.
Rambo rugs all the way for me from now on. I only put his turnout on if I know it's going to really rain, and then it's the 100g outer of his duo.

Blimey all the horses on the yard i'm at go out without rugs on even if it's raining, and there are a fair few competition horses. Is this bad or are they ok without a rug so long as it's not cold?

If it's really hammering it down it depends which field she is in !
One has plenty of grass and natural shelter so she keeps warm by munching but the other field is yellow bare so I'd pop a l/w rug on and add some hay.

I've learned that Masta summer rugs are NOT waterproof in hard prolonged rain.

I just didn't realise I should go for a 1200 as opposed to 600

Thanks to all for the info!
Her L/W Rambo XL was worth every penny.

I've always used Weatherbeeta turnout's and never have a problem with them, the Shires summer Typhoon also has a 1200 denier outer so you could try that as neither of them are very pricey (£40/£55)
Have just invested in a Fal and a Rhino pony rug for my 13.2hh Welsh B cross Arab and find they come up much smaller than Weatherbeeta (She has large shoulders and a huge belly at the moment too (blushes)). They are very lovely rugs and obviously well made and I'm sure they will last for years.

I have a lightweight rambo supreme with detatchable neck and an amigo lightweight and they are both great. Good luck!!
