Well as we have our Intermediate this season next week thought we needed some more jumping practise - how right was i!!!

Started off in the 1.10 warmed up well and then went in and jumped very well for him, hit great strides all the way round i was in control but he just wasn't jumping high enough so had 3 down and such a shock he had a stop. Now song never stops so not quite sure what was going on - i just put it down to not riding my corner correctly and not having enough leg on. First

So then was in two minds about the 1.15 but i need to jump higher so walked the course and it wasnt to bad went out hopped on as was 2nd to go and i kid you not he stopped at almost every warm up fence - by now i was getting a bit confused as i was giving him perfect shots and he just wasn't jumping and way dropped the front rail on the oxer and he jumped it borrowed a very nice persons stick as i don't ride him with on (i get a bit slap happy!!) But went it and meant it. Well i have to say it wasn't out best round but we got round with again 3 down!!

He just got flatter as we went round but didnt even think of stopping in the ring.

So i have no idea what to do - he was lame for a few days after hartpury but was fine on the 3rd so we didnt get the vet but hes had a niggling leg issue on that leg for a few years now. Hes also got very good at chipping in strides, didnt do it too much today though. So do you think i should bite the bullet and get the vet out (am seriously thinking about it anyway) just to let him have a look possibly scan?? Then im thinking our vet saw him jump at gatcombe PC jumping (hes a PC dad) and didnt say anything but do you think he would have??? Or do i get the back man out or both??

Anyway to lighten the mood here are some pics!!

yes get the vet out. if the horse doesn't characteristically stop I wouldn't have taken him in the class, might be a leg playing up or something else.
Hope its nothing!

So how busy was it? What was the parking like?

Anyway going back to song, when was the last time you took him out show jumping (on a surface)? Have you been jumping much at home?

Just thinking if he hadn't been doing much (as everything cancelled), could have been slightly pooped going into the 1.15m?

He sounds like he is behaving like he has got some pain somewhere. I would get him checked over.

Well done though.

Well done for getting round twice - v hard on a horse that's having a sticky day, esp at that height.

Prob not what you want to hear, but based on past experience, when a bold horse gets sticky, there is often a physical reason for it. Every time it's happened to me & I've thought it was a schooling issue, cr*p riding etc, it has turned out to have a root cause.

I'm going to bite the bullet & get someone out to look at A this week - a physio person as (don't laugh) the horse communicator told me that A fell over before I had him & v badly bruised his shoulder/forearm. Apparently that's why he goes a bit

now that he's jumping higher & working in a more advanced shape, cos it's aggravating the old injury.

So you won't be the only person spending some money this week.

I don't think your vet would have noticed/said anything cos it's prob hard to tell if a horse is a fraction 'off' when it's charging about jumping, & he prob wouldn't have been looking for it anyway.

We can compare notes/bills in due course!!

Good luck.

It's impossible to say without seeing but the sudden change suggests an underlying problem. I'd get a vet to see him and, if possible, someone you respect to have a sit on him. Sometimes, if you're the only one riding a horse and not riding lots of others, you can miss something going off the rails because it happens gradually and/or because you keep finding situational "explanations" for it.

Do you have older photos of him jumping? Has his form changed at all? He looks to be jumping with his left hip lower is a couple of those photos and the one from the right over the "German" oxer the muscles of his thigh/hamstring don't seem to contracting smoothly. Not saying any of that is pertinent, just what jumps out.

Also, lots of horses stop because they hurt but don't stop every time, so that's not really proof either way.

Good luck, I hope you get it sorted.

Well even thou we had 3 down they are still Ok rounds for us his jumping ahs got alot better this year we were having up to 5/6 down before this season and our worst this year has been 3 so equal

Tarr steps re his pelvis it always goes slightly and his contracting on his bum has been like this all season and havnt got any from the same angle before this

And re riding other horses its what i do for a job - i work in racing - most of them are not straight so compared to them somg feels FAB! and compared to gogs i would say they are about the same - and no noone else has ridden him in a very long time!!

Cotswold sj - parking was a nightmare as all on hard standing and there were about 35 in the smaller classes and about 25 in the others. He last jumped on sat at Gatcombe novice (1 down at 1.10) and comp before that was hartpury CCI* on a surface and had 2 down (1.15) and hes deff not tired has been pulling my arms out doing his work this week

teffy - thats good about pics was having a little play whilst we were stood around!! were you in the purple hoddie?? will ahve to say hello at some point thats the 2nd time we have both been there jumping!! Lol

I was planning on going there the weekend, but the way the weather had been decided best to stay at home. Looks like they have some new fences since I went last.
Good pictures !!

When did you last get his back looked at? As soon as my horses start to do things uncharacteristically I always zoom off to Wiltshire to get them looked at, and usually there is something up. You say his was lame after competing at Hartpury so I would say there is a good chance of something being wrong.. and if you haven’t done much since then it was obviously tweaking him the weekend bless him. I wouldn’t bother with a vet just get him to a chiropractor .. I can recommend a very good one if you need a number !!
