Help, my BC has a sun burnt nose.

I put factor 40 on it but he keeps licking it off. Obviously on the really hot days I keep him indoors where its cooler and let him out in the garden in the evening.

But as he's a BC I can't keep him cooped up all day, every day.

Called the vets to see what they advised - they said either to keep him indoors or try a water proof sun cream.

I seam to remember when I had a pink mussled horse that lived out 24/7 I had some green stuff that I used to put on.

OH says he's a working dog, the breed are used to being outside and that I am pampering him - I don't want him to be in discomfort or worse delvelope skin cancer.

Does anyone know of anything better than what the vets advise, or have the same problem with their dog?

I would try and keep him in the shade if you can, he might be a working dog but tell your OH he'll be no good to anyone with a sore nose, an infection (if it blisters) or worse.

For what he has now, I would try aloe vera gel or natural yogurt to soothe the heat.

is a BC a border collie? i would be asking my vets to run some bloods and see what his liver and kidney function is like. most sunburns on noses (horses and dogs) is a photosensitive reaction due to liver overload or dysfunction! does he have access to lots of buttercup ridden feilds? livers do regenerate. milk thistle is a good additive to help this.

Thanks for the replies.

I have some aloe vera gel so will put some of that on - why didn't I think of that??

I took him into the vets when I asked for advice, the nurse took a look at him and did not mention the possibilty of liver problems. Fortunately he does not have access to buttercup fields as I have to take him into town to walk him due to having to use a mobility scooter (the tracks round here are inpassable for a scooter)

Think I will just have to keep him indoors when the suns out, seams such a shame - unless others have any other ideas?

Get one of the "white" out sunblocks that have titanium dioxide as the block. It provides a physical barrier rather than a chemical action against UV. Well they come in a variety of colours now. He will lick it off but you will have to keep reapplying it and some residue will be left anyway so that is better than nothing or having to keep him in.
