Can anyone suggest a good treatment for sunburn? Even though we have had no sun, my grey arab has a big scab on her nostril which is really sore and is affecting our ridden work as she turns in circles, shakes her head and rears, I'm assuming due to it being painful. We are hoping to do our first jumping competition in July, which I will cancel if necessary but I would much rather avoid cancelling. I'm currently putting sudocrem on it and sunguard over the rest of her nose

Freddie has factor 50 suncream on when the sun is out. If that hasn't worked perhaps a fly mask with a nose net on may help her stop getting burnt?

I hear Aloe Vera gel is supposed to be soothing for suncream but I don't think there is anything you can really do once the damage is done.
Best stop it happening in the first place by covering her up.

slap some aloe vera on, i used that along with sudocrem last year as my new pony came to me badly sunburnt. She now wears a nose screen and touch wood its working lovely

I would be getting a nose cover or full face fly mask to prevent any further burning asap. As mentioned above, aloe vera is meant to be good for soothing burns, so might be worth a try.

Just a warning - Sudocrem is great if you're putting it on while stabled but if you've been turning out with it on her nose will actually burn more (something to do with it being oil based I think).

Get aloe vera gel and some aloe vera juice from a health food shop - no additives etc - and put the gel on the sore/burnt bit and put the juice in some feed. The aloe works by healing and soothing - is absolutely brillant for sunburn.

Try a childrens high factor suncream - usually more waterproof and 'stick' better than adult/horse suncreams.

Just a word of warning, check your fields for St. Johns Wort, as if eaten, will cause photosenstivity and sunburn

Nasty stuff!

I also use Aloe Vera Gel if its looking a bit pink or sore. Suncream in daytime but I can't always get up to yard before work to put it on so have just bought a full fly mask with a nose cover to see if that will help - typically once i bought it the weather turned and he hasn't had a chance to wear it yet!!

The best treatment is ALOE VERA, buy a plant, peel a leaf and use the gel, keeps in the fridge for a wk or more and you can use it too, everyone in spain uses it, especially the canary islands, and they use it for burns of all types, it is amazing.

Agree aloe vera gel is good for sun burn (as is plain old tesco after sun) but do beware of putting gel on before horse goes in the sun, it's likely to make it worse.
