Sunburn

My boy has really nasty sunburn on his muzzle... we put sudocrem on whenever we can.. which is a challenge as he goes mental and is a lot bigger than us (he can't stand cream on his nose... part of the reason we got into this mess)... it's dead dead scabby and I'm now completely paranoid it will never heal and poor chap will look sore and scabby forever.

aloe vera gel works a treat and also cools it down.
Does he wear a sunrelief cover , they do work brilliantly

I put one on and he pulls it off... i put his head collar over the top and he pulls them both off!

I actually sewed mine to field safe head collar which has velcro straps, but need to put 2 plaiting bands around the velcro for her to keep hers on, bl**dy mare would roll to get it off

stays on a dream now and she gives me a funny look

I heard sudocrem can make things worse as it is oil based, sorry.

I use sunguard, not sure who makes it but it's a small white jar and works a treat for me. Though she does tend to rub or lick it off!

You can buy sunblock for horses in most tack shops. I get it for mine regularly as he has a pink nose.
Have a look around, you should be able to find it in the lotions and potions section.

I use kids suncream - factor 50 I think. Works really well

I wouldn't put sudocrem on before turning back out into the sun, as mentioned it may make things worse. If he's in for the night or it's a rainy day and unlikely to be sunny then it may help it heal and keep it from cracking and being sore. Otherwise i tend to use kids waterproof suncream too and it's always done the job. I try to use ones for sensitive skin etc that don't look to have too many nasty chemicals in.

Captain has a pink muzzle so I have to protect it.I use children's extra sensitive sun cream, at first I had the same problem as you, he is very anti having anything rubbed on his nose . So I started just massaging his twitch gently, then put a little cream in my palm and massaged again. It took 3 weeks but now he puts his head down for it. Which is just as well as he is 7ft when he waves his head in the air!

I used a premier equine fly mask all summer and mine didnt get it - last year she got it horrifically

id just keep applying the sudocream tons!

Dont put sudocream on that is oily and the sun burn will cook the cream and burn him first if it is sunny put block on before he goes into the sun and after the sun goes in blaster aloe vera after sun on him!

I also use Sunguard, by Gold Label.

Friend used to do her pony's nose with sudocream and had to fight with him rearing and lashing out - it's smells horrible and he hated it.

The Sunguard is great - it's a thick white paste that stays on all day. One application in the morning for my very pink nosed pony was plenty. It also doesn't smell strongly, unlike human suncreams.
