I do - I use a factor 50 (cheapie from Tescos's) and have not had any issues.

You can probably get a horse version, but I imagine it will cost more for pretty much the same product.
 
Generally, yes it is but they are designed for human skin and generally do not 'penetrate' horse skin well. In a nutshell tends to form superficial protection layer which does not always offer protection for very long. Some of the horse specific ones will give longer lasting effect in this respect. As always be aware they may be skin reactions, a friend did tell me that some way back one product they used had very much the opposite effect to what was hoped for and had keep horse off the sun for several days as a result.
