I have noticed a few people on here feed sunflower seeds to their horses, could you please tell me why? What are the benefits/aims of doing so? Is there any scientific research into their effects on horses? I am just curious as am very interested in horse nutrition and have never heard of them being fed to horses before.

I have following the tip from Tia and have done for about a year.

Within a few weeks I noticed coat improvement. This summer - before it went wet, their feet have been in far better condition no cracks etc and Cairo has not had to have shoes put back on to keep his feet from breaking up as he normally does in May.

Tia has posted various links to the feeding of black sunflower seeds and what is in them.

I definately will keep feeding them as they really seem to give good coats and feet. They also compliment my approach of only feeding the Simple Systems fibre products.

i gave them to my 13.2 a year ago and his coat was fab he wasnt wearing a rug and i havent seen his coat like that until he was eating them i had forgotten about them tbh i willhave to get some more. i didnt realise they were good for feet aswell but he has got fab feet i think i will give them to bisciut as her feet are crap
