hi,
i use this on my 16 year old 16.1hh irish sports horse, she was the lead hunt horse for many years id ont know how long for but it has obviously taken its toll on her legs, she gets puffy fetlocks, but since feeding this it has gone down and her movement is much more smooth, but some has said to me tht taken her of it and just rinsing her legs with cold water eceryday woudl be much cheaper and work teh same, i thought this would make her joints cold and then go stiff, wat do u think? is there an alternative to superflex tht is just as good and cheaper?

thanks
Alex

Qr- I use superlfex on my 17yo ex eventer. I've tried loads of different supplements like superflex and tbh i find superflex is the one that works best. But then again, every horse is different. Sorry if this isn't much use .

Cold hosing and a joint suppliment are absolutely not even comparable. Cold hosing will only target soft tissue such as tendons and ligaments and will halp take swelling down. it will not at all help arthritic changes in joints caused by a heavy work load. A joint supplement helps to repair, rebuild, and prevent further joint damage, reducing stiggness, swelling, and pain. coold hosing will not ease stiffness. long term a joint suppliment will have a significant benefit for your horse. Absolutely feeding a joint suppliment is more than beneficail particularly for horses that have had a busy working life. Swelling in legs and stiffness from a horse who has a had a heavy work load is more than likely arthritic related not soft tissue relaed which will only be helped with a joint supplement keep your horse on it.

Cold hosing and joint supplements work in completely different ways, as monstermunch said. I used SuperFlex on my mare over the summer, she has bad arthritis in both knees and it helped to turn her around completely. She went from hopping lame to being back hacking and schooling again.

I know SuperFlex is expensive, but it really is worth it. Getting the biggest sizes you can makes it cheaper.

I think for an older horse trying to aid whats happening from inside outwards is the key. Hosing will take down swelling thats occuring due to something like a superficial injury/ heat in the leg rather than something that joint/bone related.

Supplements such as Superflex are really popular anything with a high glucosamine content will help older horses with stiffness/ arthritis. Also have you tried magnetic wraps on legs. I feel they not only help with the magnets but also help keep her legs warm which i think helps, if you're a bit stiff , keeping warm surely helps?

I have used this with an 18yr old mare who did a lot of hunting in her younger years and has arthritis in both hocks. Its helped enormusly and she has a lot more movement now. Its not so expensive when it lasts 5 months, the larger size as it works out about £11 per month. I met the NAF rep who said its more easily absorbed that other joint supplements as its not fluffed up with fillers and the powder is made up more pure ingredients.

Worth its weight in gold I would say.
