Just wondering if anyone uses grocery-store bought products in their horse's feed and what they do? :)

At my current yard, some liveries buy yeast, garlic powder, apple cider vinegar and oil to add to their horse's daily evening feed.

I've also heard of people adding things like sunflower seeds and making their own electrolytes.

I currently have the ride of someone else's horse but will be moving to the UK soon and buying and competing my own horse and I wanted to know more about how I could save on supplements.

I've heard a lot of different things about the benefits of apple cider vinegar..what exactly does it do? :D

I'd be amazed if some of those things are cheaper in a supermarket!

I buy oil and salt at the supermarket for my ponies

I've heard of various spices being used for all manner of things including enhancing coat colour

I used to use powdered geletine in misterjay's feed for his horn quality - recommended by my very good, old school farrier.

And it really helped!

I forgot this! A very old school horse man told me this as well years ago. I stopped using it as a few people had a go at me about the ethics of using it. The same horses feet are suffering again now though so will definitely give it another try. Better that than him be sore and have rubbish hoof quality.
Thanks for the reminder! ;)

When I fed sunflower oil, I bought that from the supermarket and I buy salt from the supermarket. Cider vinegar is fantastic stuff - a real tonic and cure all! However, the stuff you buy from the supermarket won't cut it - you need unfiltered cider vinegar with the 'mother' left in it which is like a cobwebby substance. The stuff in supermarkets is pure and filtered and has no benefits for horses or humans.
