Superstition - changing a horses name?

I'm supersticious that way, never changed first horses name, she retired at 22 after being a wee star, changed 2nd horses name, he was diagnosed with djd 2 yrs after getting him, field ornament since 6/7, ive never changed my 3rd horses name and it wouldnt have been my choice !!

I have changed plenty of names including my best horse, who is sadly no longer with me but was a star and lived a long, happy life, I never worry about it although it is now more of a problem if trying to change some of the awful names on passports.

LOL, I once helped a dealer match passports to horses for a sale. He had about 40 from one breeder who had passported them by which field they were kept in i.e. Tank Field 1, Tank Field 2 etc. I always wondered what the new owners of those little cobs did about it.

Thats even worse than the ones I had in mind, I had to sell a mare that was passported with Weatherbys as Whizzy Buck:eek:, no possibility of changing it, luckily her new owners had a sense of humour:D

I don't know about the luck aspect, but I wouldn't hesitate to change a name if I didn't like it/didn't suit. First horse, just called her Peg (name was Pagan - did NOT like that!). Hugo's name suits him down to the ground - couldn't have picked better!

One horse on our yard came with the name Campbell (her previous horse was Bovril and she didn't want another named aver soup!!), but the owner didn't like it so she changed it to Jupiter. Everyone calls him BOB! :D

we have always changed our horses names if the names were not liked, they usually end up with nicknames which suit them better. I am not superstitious, I got married on Friday 13 and its all good :-)

I bought my 3yo from a dealer who had got him from the sales along with 4 or 5 other very similar looking youngsters. Turns out all the passports went with the wrong horses when the dealer sold them, so due the mix up my boy is called Dexter (the name he came with, and what I knew his as from the start), but 2 months into owning him I found out his real (passport/chip) name is completely different! Thankfully all passports are with the right horses now - after much stressing!

Ive changed a few names, Im not superstitious in the slightest, touch wood!!

Never had any problems I can relate back to a name change. Had a few horses with breed registered that have never had a stable name too, and changing them from 'that black mare by x' to a real names never been a problem either :)

Id never ever change a 'real' registered name given by the breeder as I think thats not nice for the breeder and I wouldnt like it done to me, but stable names are fair game. Mind you most of mine also have pet silly names as well, they answer to pretty much anything :p

We don't- even if it's a silly name, we stick with it. To be fair, they get so heavily nicknamed it doesn't really matter! Reg get's called Fregga mostly, a pony called Ellie got 'Yak'.

Silly names have a charm in themselves. We've had an Ebony who was pure white, a Misty who was an alarming shade of pink and one pony had the unfortunate show name of Burnt Biscuit (colour when he was a foal- he then turned into a silver dun...).

My youngster was called Kenzi when I got her according to the seller, but when I tried to get the microchip details put into my name, all the paperwork came to me and her real name was Spirit. Although I prefer Spirit (and it would have suited her perfectly!) I had already had her a couple of months and had got used to Kenzi, so I never changed it back.

I changed my boys name from Chandler to Aston.. don't think theres been anything bad happen from it, Chandler never suited him anyway, but Aston suits him down to the ground! Normally just gets called Asty though :)

My new potential purchase is called susie, breeder also has a dog the same name so some woman in his background is memorable lol! Hate the name, does nothing for her but as i livery with breeder it might have to stay. ...

A friend of mine had a lovely big chestnut boy whose name she changed to Reef (don't remember what his original name was) . . . after many lameness issues, turned out he had both kissing spines and SI problems. They tried surgery, but eventually he was PTS.

When she bought her next horse he came with the name Cuddles . . . had affiliated at BE with it and it was on his passport . . . b/c of what happened to Reef, Cuds kept his name :).

Yes, have often changed names on arrival for use at home.
Never gone the whole hog for competing, as all had prefix's anyway and would never do a breeder out of recognition.

Latest tiny fuzzy has had name change on arrival, as
1. Didn't know her name
2. Didnt suit her
3. The name had already belonged to a previous incumbent on my yard & I never have duplicates where possible, however many yrs have passed.

The other 2 fuzzies have been called theirs (1 slightly shortened) as knew their names on arrival with me :)

Mom doesn't believe in changing a horse's name. She had a TB when she was younger named "Horse 3421" or something simialar (horse and then number), it had never been raced so owner never named it anything other than horse and it's number was just there to say that he was the 3421th foal of the season. She changed it to Lord Gracestoke, got colic and died a few days after name change

Having bred & registered 3 horses, I'd be very upset if I found out their names had been changed. Even their stable names had a huge amount of thought go into them.

I have changed the name of several horses and ponies, with no better or worse luck than with any other or at any other time. Old wives tail;)

I changed my horse's name, he is a strapping 17hh grey TB who came to me with the name of "Snowy"!! I felt this was more appropriate for a little child's pony lol but couldn't decide what I actually did want to call him. He spent a week or two being "The Grey Thing", then my ex named him Romeo, coz he's such a soppy sod :) (the horse, not the ex!)

Luck and superstition (good or bad) only works if you believe in it. It's like a self fulfilling prophecy.

I don't believe in any of it and have changed almost all my horse's names in the past.
