Hi
I just wondered if anyones uses any supplements to prevent mud fever or that helps clear it up when horses get it? Any advise appreciated.
I have cream from the vet which is helping the scabs but wondered whether there was any good supplements out there that will help. He is on Equinacea at the moment.

Anything that boosts the immune system could help, but TBH I don't think it makes much diffference. Used NAF stuff before, which have heard good things about, if you can get your horse to eat it!!!

I have no evidence but I believe linseed stops my white legged, thin skinned horse from getting mud fever. He practically lives out 24/7 (comes in now and again overnight if weather is really bad), but really spends most of winter out in the field which is very muddy in parts, and he never gets mud fever. I feed him a tea cup full cooked every day, but you can get it from simple systems ready cooked if you can't be bothered cooking it.

I've used Global Herbs Mud-X. Weird stuff ! it comes in two bags that you have to mix together, smells like curry power. I think it worked and would use it again. Its not expensive. Found that my horse would stop eating her feeds though if you put too much in. She usually gets mud fever on all legs, bit worse on back legs but it never caused a problem but wanted to do something to stop her getting it and couldn't be bothered with creams n stuff. The one winter I used it she only got a small bit on her front legs. The weather was a bit drier than it had been the previous year though. I would buy it again though.

I use Feel Good 30 skin supplement. I think it's designed for sweet-itch, and contains zinc and MSM. It's helped improve the condition of our hairy's legs, but hers are scurfy and scabby all year round.
We tried her on NAF mudguard, but she wouldn't eat it.

Thanks for the info guys. Does anyone know anywhere that you can get a sample of NAF or Global herbs stuff. Its just that my boy id fussy when it comes to smelly foods and he wont take bute or antibiotics in his dinner so im worried that he wont eat the supplments you have mentioned. Did anyone try covering the smell or taste with mint? did that work?

I put plenty of udder cream on my horses legs, it looks messy but works great. It only takes a minute to slap it on all 4 every morning before turnout and it is cheap!!!!! so far this year so good!! and with all this rain!!!!!!!!!
