My mare has come into season and isn't concentrating like she usually does, and she's spookier and more excitable. Has anyone used any supplement to take the edge of mares like this? She's not aggressive, she's just MUCH more hyper and I need her to focus! I only got her in August so I'm not sure how she'll be as the Spring/Summer progresses.

Any advice?

Theres alsorts of herbal products our there such as Moody Mare, Stroppy Mare, Oestress etc. Worst case scenarios some mares are put on Regu-Mate (synthetic form of progesterone called progestin).

However with my mare none of the above ever worked!!! Beacuse I have a general idea when she does come into season, I just dont compete her etc as not worth the battles we have!

Trial and error, so good luck! :)

Is this her first season of the year?
the first season is usually worse - it should get better as they become regular again through spring.
A lady on our yard used Oestress with great results on her mare.
Personally i'd see what the next season is like before spending money on something that may or may not work :)

I tried all the herbal supplements for my mare. Oestress works for her but have to keep her on th highest does. She gets touchy round the flanks, when girthing and is stroppy on the school without it.

That's what I was thinking. If she doesn't settle down I'll try chaste berry. She's only 6 too, would this make a difference?

I use Oestress on my mare, and we cant live without it! All year round she is on maintenance and then she goes onto full dose when in season. Its by far the best thing weve used!

I have the same problem with my mare when in season.... which she is now!
Hyper, spooky and like a banana in the school!
I used Oestress last year and she was like a different horse! I have just started it again so fingers crossed!!

Kacey88 - I found Equine America's No More Moods (liquid chasteberry) a godsend with my mare during spring/early summer when my mare was young. Her behaviour was the same as your mares, with aggression towards handlers (mainly biting) thrown in too at times, and napping when ridden a real problem on certain days. I found it useful to keep a diary of her moods and a pattern emerged so that I could be prepared. I found that it was more mid-cycle that her touchiness/excitability/lack of focus etc. surfaced, rather than when she was actually in season, when she became gentle and mellow.
She got noticeably better the older she became and now (at rising ten) her behaviour is far more consistent both to ride and handle. I haven't required No More Moods or any such supplement now for the last three years and doubt now that I ever will.
That said, the last couple of weeks she's been extremely keyed up when hacked out, not a relaxing ride at all which is unlike her, so I don't doubt your mares behaviour is temporary "spring fever".

Hi I have got a very fizzy high strung PBA/belguim warmblood 5 yr old spooky mare and have her on the mollichaff calmer with Ride & relax and global herbs frisky mare and supercalm. Just starting to see the benefit now 4 week into the feeding plan. She still her but just a bit more calmer and when she does spook or pass a field of sheep like this morning she looks turns but does not bomb off and will then walk past.

Also when in season I give her D & H chase tree berrys in her mix.

So far so good !

oestress all the way! with my mare she has seasons ALL year round :-( and can be very marish but with the oestress she's a different horse :-)

My girl can lose concentration and get a bit stroppy in her attitude to work when in season, excitible and a bit hyper, Equimins nightmare has been brilliant, she was on it 1 week and my coach commented on how together she was in comparison to the excitible wee tb she can be. There are also no banned substances in it
