I'm currently re-schooling an older ex-racehorse/ hunt horse to do some show jumping in the next few months. Due to her age, and her background, she sometimes gets a bit stiff and slightly lame.

Can anyone suggest a supplement that would be suitable? I know that she used to be on Newmarket joint supplement when she was on the hunt yard, but it's very expensive!

Thank you,
Maddy

I used to feed my old ex racer MSM and that really did seem to help. I'd tried nearly all of the really expensive ones on the market but honestly couldn't feel / see much difference. Someone recommended MSM as they took it themselves (human grade) and said they felt great so I tried it on the old man and he seemed much improved. NAF sell it but there are cheaper options where you aren't paying so much for the packaging.....

my mare has bone spavin and i have tried all sorts of glucosamine and chrondothingy type supplements including cortaflex ha and find they do not make any difference. currently using one from the vets which is £80 and also seems ineffective. i also use apple cider vinegar and linseed which are inexpensive and worth a try> as with all things horsey it depends on the individual!!

I used to have my mare on suppleaze gold, rose hips and bosweilia, but as this was costing quite a. It I changed to TEN supplements challenged joints which includes everything I was feeding, but half the price. She has been on it for 2 months and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both hocks and fetlocks, did a check ligament and had reactive sidebone (all this happened at the same time).

She was in and out of work last year, but (touchwood) has been back in full work for the past 2 months. She feels great, something is helping!

I also use a lot of magnets on her, magnetic rug, wraps, hock and bell boots and these seem to help as well.

They also do a healthy joints one which is more for maintenance. They may be worth looking at. You also get points which you can use to deduct from orders.

Thank you, I did look at TEN supplements for 'senior joints' but it advised not to feed to a horse with a history of gastric ulcers, which worried me a little because she's an ex-racer and very likely to have gastric ulcers! I don't know if this is the case for the one for 'challenged joints'?

i also recommend TENS challenged joints. We switched from NAF Superflex and Devils Relief to TENS challenged joints last Spring. Not only is pony doing really well on it, but she also has none of the side effects we think she was getting from the Devils Claw in it. And it costs me half what I was paying previously.

There are no advisories on feeding Challenged Joints. I was told the main difference between Challenged and Senior was the devils claw, which is why we opted for Challenged.

I received an email yesterday with a code of TRYTEN which gives you 50% off any TENS supplement. I thought this might be useful if you were interested in giving it try.

Mine is on Gold Label Bute Free, he has ring bone in his right fore and ring bone and side bone in his left - he was sometimes lame and always unlevel, he is now just occasionally unlevel and is able to hack out happily. It's been great for my boy, but I've found different things work for different horses. It only costs a tenner though and lasts a month so worth a try?
