I've noticed that my horse is rubbing his head/chest and neck on his stable door when the weather is humid and close.

I'ts not sweet itch and he doesn't break his skin rub it raw or damage his fur so it's not a major issue.

I just but wondered if anyone has successfully used anything,

thanks

Brewers yeast, marmite for horses and cheap as chips on line. Also helps to balance the gut, good stuff

Sorry - Mulberrymill - Neither balance the gut - Brewers yeast is a dead by-product. It has limited feed value - B vits and protein is about it.

If your horse is itching and you are looking to balance the gut and provide a wealth of nutrients IMO you couldn't get much better, effective (or long term, cheaper) than Alltechs LifeForce. Contact Slinkyunicorn on here or google Rutland Horse Extras.

I realise that your horse isn't Sweetitch, but to give you an example of how effective it is - I have a pony who has suffered intolerably with SI for years, I have tried everything under the sun. The most effective was in the end a rug. Not ideal when it was so hot etc. I was just looking at Mags tonight and the skin is so much improved after only a few months of being on it. I usually start boosting his immune system at the beginning of the year but "didn't quite get there" this year. Aaaand the itch got there before me... But as I say, I have had him on this for a few months, the scabs are all loose and flaky and the skin is looking SO much clearer already. :)

Crazy Friesian, i was only referring to brewers yeast, as a lot of people feed marmite, hence my reference.
I looked up your recommended alternative, and cannot find any info about the ingredients. At the price it is, i would want to know what is in it before i considered feeding, it appears to be a huge secret as any amount of googling cant find it, and i have never heard of it before.

Actually there's a wealth of data from labs all over the world to show that yeast in all forms (extract and live) has beneficial effects for sufferers of IBS, cholera, Crohn's and mucositis. I'd say based on its content it has a superb feed value. Vit B6 for example is better known as nicotinamide and has been shown to suppress the inflammatory effects of iodides amongst other things, plus acts in the same way as benzodiazepines (hence its use in anxious people and animals).

Fed in live form, yeast CAN help balance the gut, as it binds to pathogenic bacteria by use of integrins. This means that the bacteria are not free to bind to the epithelium of the gut - the first step of any infection and stimulation of the inflammatory process.

OP, have you wormed with Ivermectin, yet, this year? Might be worth doing as a precaution, in case there are any passengers. Topically you could try Neem oil, as it's soothing and antiseptic, whilst repellent of any critters (and people, ha ha). I'd feed linseed, too, alongside the BY.
