Supplement to help oldies with creaky joints

My 16.2h 560kg boy is on a scoop of Newmarket joint supplement daily. He's stiff behind, and it was recommended by my vet. I pay about £75 for a 1.5kg tub which lasts him 6 months. If you have a smaller horse/pony it would last longer.

It works well for my boy :)

mytwofriends, my mare is 16hh so would probably last around the same.. to be fair £75 for 6 months supply seems more reasonable than £60 for 4 months of cortaflex.. i'll look into this! thanks x

My retired arthritic ex-polo pony has been on Devil's Claw for the last month and I have noticed a definite improvement.

Good luck! I did a search online and found the price varies from seller to seller. One seller had it priced at £89 so shop around!

I love cortaflex, and synequin. Both are expensive but there the only things i have used that work. I do rate the equine america products and it may be worth a look at the other products they have and see if anything they have is a bit cheeper.

One thing to make sure of is the amounts, E.G if useing glucosamine supplement then make sure you get one with the correct amount in per daily serving because a surprising amount of products have nowhere near enough to have an effect and your just buying expensive horse pee :)

Personally dont rate cortaflex i use Feddmakrs Extra flex for my current horse and very old heavy horse who was like a three year old on the stuff, he was fantastic at work we use Joint FX which has everything you could possibly want in it but its super expensive although seems to last a long time

Devils claw is a type of pain relife which will help with arthritis type things as its an inflamtion and devils claw is an anti inflamatory btu can cause tummy upset so dont feed it anything that has gastric ulcers, prone to colic etc and also you shouldnt feed it to broodmares not sure on the reasoning behind that though

The only reason its not to be fed to broodies is if they have a foal at foot or are in foal! But thanks for the info, just trying to find something to help her as she looks quite uncomfortable, not in pain kind of uncomfortable but shes incredibly stiff. Funny how some seem to age quicker than others.

I am pretty sure the Newmarket one does, I did lots of looking around for that reason when I needed it for my mare and it seemed to come up top and with my vets recommendation. You do need to be careful with them so many ones sold that are rubbish!

Cider Vinegar can really help too, my mare improved on that and it's very cheap to try!

There are loads of joint supplements out there, but the main ingredient of all of them is probably Glucosamine, so any supplements with this in should help, dont go spending a fortune, however I do use corta-flex on my horse :D

I have also heard that Cider Vinegar works, I also give this to my horse, he has a range of supplements so im not sure which one works, or they all work as a whole :)

One of my vets also reccomended just feeding them a pure glucosamine supplement [they sell it at the vets] but i think this was quite expensive. x

Definitely helped with his stiffness.

It's an anti-inflamatory, great for both stiffness and pain relief. Be careful with Devil's Claw as when dried it looses its active ingredients quickly if it isn't stored in an airtight container out of direct sunlight, rendering it useless.

When liquified in alcohol this doesn't happen

That's great stuff.

I have used Equi-elements and maxavita for both horses and myself and have felt a remarkable difference too!!

I use Cosequin for my 30yo TB the difference in her is very noticable, ive also been able to drop her daily Danilon as her stiffness has got less and less. It is expensive to buy but a tub last for ages as the scoop is teeny tiny, Ive just got a 700g tub for £99 as it was on offer normal price was £141!! gulp!!

my mare is on cosequine as well, it really works, iv managed to drop her bute down to one every other day. I buy mine from amazon.com a 1400 tub is about 120.00 delivered with taxes, well worth the money this lasted 7months for a 16hh horse
