Supplement to help the autoimmune system?

As my horse has equine recurrent uveitis, I am reading up as much as I can to try to prevent it flaring again. One of the causes my vet has discussed is the immune system turning on itself. So, as there are people on here who really know their facts about supplements, what should I be looking for? Google is not helping as while it gives me a lot of choices, it is not helpful as I don't know which configurations and amounts are best. Can anyone help?

Just a word od warning. If the uveitis is an autoimmune condition you need to STAY AWAY from anything which "boosts the immune system." otherwise you are just adding fuel to the fire so to speak.

Good luck with your horse :)

From what I have experienced of RUI, ( had two horses with this ) you need to learn the warning signs and get the atropine in asap, keep a mask on in the stable and a Guardian mask in the field. I had a diary to write everything down, weather, sun wind snow etc to work out the trigger as it seemed monthly a lot of the time.

Brewers yeast can help this condition

Also depending on the cause as you need the vet to tell you this - I have not read these but told about them https://trinity-consultants.com/product-category/immunity/.

I remember my vets words " the quicker you get the "Atropine" in the less vision is lost as less damage as you need to dilate the pupil. My vet trusted me to put the Atropine in the moment it started and my horses did not lose any vision at all. My horse use to start shaking her head at the beginning that was her warning sign then if left which it wasn't unless it happened during the night, then gradually the eye started to close then go weepy and puff up.

Thank you all very much. My vet has told me to look at my horses eyelashes. They will start to straighten or droop as soon as pain begins and ahead of heat, puffiness etc. Looking at both the guardian and equivozor to see which is the best one. As one is around the £75 mark and the other £185 + I am checking carefully which is better. Currently I am assuming everything could set off a flare so mine is out at night only, ridden in a mask, kept in when it is windy and avoiding very bright light. I will talk to my vet about the atrophine (which I still have left over). I really appreciate your comments and advise.

Never heard of the equivozor, I can only comment on the Guardian Mask, as I still have my other horses one. I know cost is the issue but they do filter out 95% shades.

Have you looked at the Guardian Mask website?? http://www.horsemask.com/Uveitis.html and you do not have to buy from the USA http://www.horsemask.com/Distributors.html. Guardian is about £ 100 ish and to me it is the better options it is for RU.

If money is the issue what about this though I have only just found it and Know nothing about it http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Busse...hash=item3ab6a2e05f:m:moRL8IFHiFCfo-Ej8EdGV_A.

Thank you for that. It doesn't say what UV it will filter out. I had bought the equilibrium one which was just under £40 and filtered out 80% but now have found that is not high enough...hence going out at night for the interim. The equvizor "seems" to be getting better reports than the guardian but so it should at double the price. It looks like a PVC or similar mask. Not sure how it would stand up to rolling/ brambles so am trying to find out. Any experiences or info you can share is really appreciated. I have joined a ERU FB page which is proving helpful but the internet is not really being a good source for me.

My horse jumped wearing it and had no issue, I did find the eye pieces needing reversing intermittently due to the roiling and it worked fine doing that. The eye pieces were easy to remove and clean and reverse. It never came off in the field and fitted easy over the bridle for x country. We got many funny looks or comments but action speaks louder and I just turned a blind eye to the comments.

It never irritated my mare and she wore it without a problem, I did find there were fewer attacks once I bought it. She work a cashel mask in the stable and the guardian turned out.

Try get your vet to allow you to put the atrophine in if they think you can do it or confident too. My vets always told me that if after 4 hours there was no sign of improvement to call them out. I managed to reduce the flare ups much quicker by doing straight away, but you would have to make sure your vet was happy.

We currently have one here who has RU and the guy who owns it has had to learn the warning signs his horse gives, and act according.

Sorry to be so painful...why a mask in the box? Would I be right in assuming your box opens onto a yard? My box is in a small barn ( 4 boxes only) and I have simply shut his outside window..

No I don't mind if it will help you :)

There is an overhang in the block she was in but it is an outside stable and sun and snow were still too bright for her. I worried it could trigger an attack so anytime she was in she wore a mask and also stopped any dirt or bedding irritating it while she was asleep

It depends how far you want to go, is his window large?? because if it is there will still be a lot of light coming in and if he stands and looks out that can still be too bright.

Thank you for the clarification. The 4 boxes are built on a 2 x 2 with 1 doorway. His box is at the end and he can look into the passage way, see partly onto the yard and of course his equine companions. When I shut the window onto the yard, it is twilight in his box even on a really bright day so feel OK about that but he still gets plenty of fresh air. I do feel mean as he loved looking out but weigh that up against another flare and can live with it.

I went back and questioned the supplements for the immunity and I had misunderstood. The suggestion was more around ensuring there was no inflammation of the gut, so probotics, l-cartine and turmeric were recommended. Due for a catch up with my vet shortly so will talk to her.

i have had acute uvietis myself. In terms of supplements, I have had good results with rose hips (in my case in tea form), and also vitamin D.

Good luck, a horrid & painful condition. Hope it burns itself out but steroid drops are the only real control.
