Hi

Which supplements have you had any luck with in regards to itchiness?

My mare has just had a flair up of....whatever it is she suffers with. It can't be sweetitch as she rubs her tail until at least November, but there is definitely something going on with her.

We're embarking on another experiment with lotions and potions but nothing seems to work. So far have tried:

Tea tree oil
Aloe Vera
Baby oil
Hibiscrub
Gallop medicated shampoo
Tea tree shampoo
Sensitive skin Shampoo
Avon skin so soft
Benzyl benzoate

We're now trying calamine lotion and gold label itchgone, but I'd like to try and fix it from the inside as well. But has anyone actually had any success with supplements for itchiness?

My new horse came to me six weeks ago very itchy all over, firstly he had pin worms that was the tail itchiness, and the rest of the body he was very itchy also,he is almost itch free now,the pinworms have been treated, and he was being fed a lot of unnecessary food, including ad-lib haylidge, all his food was cut out no molasses at all,he just has a hand full of mash once a day which is enough just for his vits and mins and magnesium,he is turned out twenty four seven, strip grazed.when he came I bathed him in a medicated shampoo, this I had to do twice, and after I ride him he is washed down with a lavender wash, his itching was so bad I thought he had sweetitch,he is now no more itchy than any other horse on the yard.reduced by about ninety per cent.I think he was having to much unnecessary feed.I use coopers fly spray, and around his sheath I put no more itch on by equine America and this works very well.

The sweetitch season is lasting longer and longer, so it is possible that she does have sweetitch, as long as the weather is mild the midges are around.

Global Herbs do a supplement called Itch-free which is very effective for itchy skin, but it is pretty bitter, so you have to introduce it very slowly and in tiny quantities. You might not get her on the full amount in time for it to be fully effective, but I keep feeding it all year so I don't get caught out by early/late midgies.

Have you tried Head and Shoulders for the scurfy tail?

Thanks so much for the replies

I tried Head and Shoulders but it made it worse. The scurf multiplied about ten-fold.

She has scurfy, horrid skin all year round unless I feed linseed oil, which has improved the condition of her skin dramatically but not solved the itching, so they are definitely two separate issues. She's on hardly any feed or hay, and out grazing overnight. She gets covered in fly spray and is in a fly rug.

I might have a look at the global herbs one, but she is ridiculously fussy with any feed (annoying as she is a pig with grass/hay etc), so not sure how we'd get it into her.

I answered in NL, if the horse is fussy dont buy itch free it is absolutely foul smelling and even my greedy pony would not touch it in a minute quantity. The detox is fine but try the Hilton herbs one they are usually very palatable.

Sounds to me like she needs something from the inside. What are you feeding? - is she getting plenty of vitamins and minerals? I would try something with antioxidants to support the immune system - D-Itch / Think Itch or if you are sure it isn't allergy related, try SuperSkin which will help nourish the skin.
I always ask for a sample for my fussy eater and don't normally have any trouble obtaining one. hope you get it sorted soon.
