Hello
I'm new to posting so apologies if this topic has been covered before but I'm in need of some advice.
My share horse has previously had fairly normal mare behaviour during her seasons like flirting, squirting etc but this year she has become antisocial with other horses that aren't in her herd (she isn't top mare in the herd) it started with face pulling and ears back at a gelding she's previously been fine with to recently kicking another horse (luckily no serious injuries) this happened when we had dismounted and were leading them back into the yard after a back together (where she pulled faces if he got too close to her) she kicked him as he was behind her. Then tonight we were working with one of her herd and another horse in the school and she was okish when we passed face to face (just ears back but generally ok) but then as we were coming out of a corner the mare that wasn't in her herd got behind her and she went to kick her again swinging her back end round and being quite vicious with it (again luckily nobody was hurt but that's not the point).
Has anyone else had similar with their mares? If so what have you done to stop it? I was thinking of trying some supplements for her so any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm really worried that someone or another horse is going to get hurt if this carries on. Normally she is lovely in the stable and has never raised a hoof to me so it's really out of character for her to kick out at other horses
Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions sorry about the super long post!!

Is this her first season of the year? Sometimes they can be quite painful. Otherwise, if this is unusual based on previous years, I'd have her ovaries scanned or at least speak to your vet.

Hi fran, yes first season of the year for her, she's normally so good around others it's so out of character for her that I'm thinking of getting something to help her/ease the symptoms, the faces/ears we can deal with its the kicking that's not her and potentially dangerous

Oh the joys of mares!

I have personally had amazing results from a product containing Schizandra. Essentially it detoxifies the liver so hormones are conjugated correctly, and therefore do not get out of balance in the first place. A bit hard to explain without writing a massive essay. I realise it sounds a bit airy-fairy but I did research and it all stacked up. I've had it make massive changes for my 2 mares (one of which I refused to even bring out of the paddock when she was in season!), and have heard plenty of other success stories.

Chaste berry is often recommended for moody mares. I personally haven't used it but have heard great things from friends. It balances hormones.

If you want to go for something more heavy-duty there are progesterone-based hormone supplements, but this will need veterinary involvement.

I hope this has made sense!

Just had this with a livery who was unbearable with the geldings, she has calmed down a lot now due to oestress when in season and frisky mare the rest of the time. (Global Herbs)

My retired mare was a nightmare when she was in work! The most amazing thing we tried was Regumate but it's only available from the vet and is really expensive- you have to be really careful handling it as well (gloves). When I decided this was costing too much I tried Oestrus which was decent and also a combination of Global Herbs Super Calm and Frisky Mare
