Old cushings lady is now retired due to a laminitis Attack that has left her unrideable. She is currently fed ad lib 1 hour soaked hay, top chop lite and has two salt licks in her stable. She's currently back on box rest for her pain in the bum abscess but I was wondering if she could maybe do with supplementing to help with getting rid of the smelly pus! She's now sound but it's not stopping pussing out creamy pus!
She is 399kg and 14.2hh Arab x welsh section D, 24 years old and condition scored 3/4 out of 9. Everything is shiny and she is happy in herself. Farrier says horn quality is very good despite her problems so doesn't think she needs a hoof supplement. I'm just concerned about feeding her a supplement which could cause her lammy to flare up.

Suggestions would be fantastic and stories would be much appreciated! :)

Sugar free brownies and treats for horses and owners ;)

Have you tried / heard of vitex agnus, natural herb/ plant seed is proved to work by lam trust people, I have my 30yr old Cushings mare on it and she seems brighter when on it, and appears to sweat less - I buy Hilton herbs version, worksout v economical and she's happy to eat it. I had a 10 year old shettie with Cushings till 2 years ago, sadly he kept getting lami despite all sorts including pergolide, the absesses are common following lami and do get better, but take time:(

it's a horrible disease to both have and watch the effects

sorry to disagree but vitus agnus is not proved to be effective in the treatment of cushings....there was a study done by the laminitis trust but it said it seemed to work on a few animals .....the latest info on laminitis says nothing works apart from pergoloid/prascend......check out this lecture, very interesting

Have you had her tested for cushings? Perhaps she needs to be on prascend to control this.

I agree with Splashgirl

Tried agnus cactus about 4 years ago sadly didn't work at all.
She's been on Prascend for 4 years now, 1 1/2 tablets a day.

Watched that live thing on it last week. Really interesting stuff.
I was more asking for a supplement to compliment the Prascend.

I give my cushings, IR pony pink powders. I also give her Restore now and again. She looks good on it. Have you had her tested for insulin resistance? She will keep getting lammi if she is IR and not treated.

Ill give Restore a google. Who is it made by?
She's never been tested for IR however she is closely monitored every month by vet for check ups. She doesn't seem to have any symptoms of IR and her laminitis was caused by sudden winter spurt of grass, not enough ridden work due to horrid weather and her medication not being high enough when she was tested. :( still beat myself up about it! She's 24 and a poor doer although is holding weight abit better now on new yard. X

Restore is liver tonic by Global Herbs. I feel it helps when they are on meds all the time. It seems to really brighten her up. :-)

Ahh! Looks pretty decent! I've also been advised Immuneplus by global herbs by a friend, but not sure if its suitable for cushings/lamintics? I'm so paranoid with what to give her.
Will go see if feed store do Restore on Monday :)
