My mare has had ringbone for a while without it causing major problems. Unfortunately now she's 15 its starting to become an issue. She has intermittent lameness that the vet says is caused by the calcified bone around her coronet. I don't want to retire her yet- or put on long term bute but I need some suggestions for a good supplement to help her with joint mobility etc. Thanks.

Cairo has low ringbone. I have found feeding instant linseed which I get from Simple Systems and cortaflex to help. His most effective assistance is his magnetic straps which he wears all the time.

He is now 21 and semi-retired but still gets worked 4 days a week either loose schooling, light ridden schooling or a hack.

Avoid working on tight circles and be careful on hard ground - we only walk in the summer most of the time and do faster work in the school.

Mac is on Flexy Limbs glucosamine, and at Theresa_F's recommendation, has recently gone onto Instant Linseed. He has also worn a magnetic band for the past year. Mac is 11 and still ridden everyday. (Apart from when he gets involved in fights)! He lives out 24/7 at the moment as well which has improved his stiffness no end.

The magnetic band that goes just above the coronet band below fetlock (looks like a sausage boot) are really good. My friends horse had ringbone in the same place as yours and her horse is still out on the field playing polo and is sound. I think she got it from bio-flo

They are simple straps with magnets in them and are designed to be worn all the time. I liked them as Cairo has a lot of feather so they just slip under the hair. They don't provide any heat which I wanted as his legs have built in leg warmers.

Made a huge difference to Cairo, and yes I know from a scientific point of view they should not, but take them off he goes pottery then lame, put them on and he improves again. He has now worn them continually for two years.

You can buy them as a single strap or pairs. Company is Magnetic - www.magnetic.uk.com.

Excellent advice guys. I will try the no bute and the magnetic straps. I really don't want to retire her as she so enjoys going out but is clearly miserable with the lameness. Hopefully I will see some improvement with these products.
