Supplements/herbal stuff - do they really work?

I have just spent £70 on three months worth of supplements and herbal stuff.

There is a huge range of supplements and herbal type cures for horse ailments - do they really work or is it that most problems tend to go away on their own after a while?

I have just bought some breathing supplements for my pony as he has a seasonal breathing allergy to I think autumnal fungus spores - treated last year with ventipulmin and in addition a herbal supplement which I kept him on for a few months after finishing the ventipulmin even though he appeared better.

It has now come back and after initial ventipulmin I am treating it again using the herbal stuff but wondering if it is a waste of money and it just clears up on its own once the fungus season is gone.

Has anyone had good results using supplementary feeding to cure or ease symptoms of equine problems.

For us some of the herbal/suppliment stuff is great, others are just useless. As with anything its a matter of what suits your horse, for example we've had a cushings pony that has responded to homeopathic remedies, who also wears a magnet, the magnet works for her and not others, but we also reached a stage where the "natural" stuff didn't work and conventional pain management had stepped in.

We live by the "kiss" rule - keep it simple and don't try too much in one go. I've not found a herbal alternative for a coughing pony (we have a 25year old who has just finished another course of ventipulmin) that works better than avoiding spores and soaking hay and I'm always sceptical of the "does all"remedy

as if there was, we'd all be using it!

So yes we have (even basics like garlic and marmite have worked for us, along with rhux tox and nux vom for liver and detox etc...) had some sucess but there are some I won't touch with a barge pole!!

Hope you find the one to suit your pony
