I have had my horse on hoof supplements for two years and they have definitely improved the quality of hoof.Due to various injuries and accident prone horse(tendon ,ligament and now hock fusion ,he has just had operation for fusion)my vet has suggested newmarket supplement for his joints. My question is will I be duplicating a lot of the ingredients that are used in both products. If so it might be better to switch to plain old biotin and leave the joint supplement as the main supplement.Do you have any views that might help make the right decision I dont want to ruin his feet after all this time Just for the sake of a few pounds. Thanks

Cellie - me again! My last (and wonderful) boy was diagnosed with DJD and navicular and was put on Newmarket glucosamine for his coffin joints. Why they recommend this is because there is a much higher concentration of the actual compound that could help your horse's joints (and it's very high quality) than in other brands or than when its just one ingredient in a whole host of others. My understanding is that hoof supplements are aimed at improving the horn quality whereas joint supplements aim to improve the joint surfaces and fluid inside the joint. I'd read the list of ingredients on the hoof supplement tub (or ring the manufacturers) but I'd go with the two different ones as they are doing two different things.

A hoof and joint supplement are two completely different products. You would need to feed both if you didn't want to loose the benefits of a hoof supplement. Generally a joint supplement will contain Glucosamine, MSM, and Chondroitin, in any combination, and will not have an effect on hoof growth only on joint health. A hoof supplement will contain biotin, methionine, lysine, amongst other things, which are specifically choosen for their hoof growth properties.
Hope this helps you

yes thanks going to be a bit costly but I dont care as long as it works!!!!!!newmarket supplement is the most expensive but it has a good reputation

same problem with my horse poor hoof quality and previous ligament damage so has 2x supplements, i have used feelgood 30 as you can use together, however wondering if a good feed balancer would work instead as spending a fortune on supplements as other horse has digestive supplement and both have pink powder.

Hi debsflo
I emailed one of the sites that sell newmarket supplement they said it was one of the best supplements on the market for joints because the ingredients were very pure but they wouldnt help with hoof maintenance.I think the balancer would probably work out at a similiar price as the supplement because they are £30 per bag and I would imagine this would only last month. Its a minefield just as you think you have the feed situation worked out another product comes along.A balancer wouldnt have high rate of glocosomine that my horse needs so I will stick with njs.

I had my horse on Cortaflex on the advise of my own vet however when i had him at the large animal hospital i was advised that the new Market Joint supplement was a better supplement for him to have for his joints.. He has arthiritis.. Hes only 6. I have now got him on New Market Joint supplement and hes had IRAP treatment and i am almost scared to say but hes went sound! Fingers crossed he stays that way.. I did have him on Cortaflex for a few months and noticed no difference at all..

Looks like njs is the best as agreed by all our vets.My boy like yours is 6 and has arthritis thats why he has had surgery on his hock .What is irap treatment .

I was gutted when i got told my boy had arthritis, i cried for days.. IRAP is a new treatment where they take blood from him and incubate it for 24 hours then inject it into his joint.. check out www.clydevetgroup.co.uk for the proper info, but before he had IRAP he had had the cortisone injec (wrong spelling) and hadnt went sound, Hes on Egg Bar shoes and he wont stay in on box rest, jumping out over stable door and smashing another stable door! Hes out in a paddock with magnetic boots and since the IRAP treatment 2 weeks ago and the new market Joint supplement i am almost scared to say hes actually went sound! hes my life and no matter if i can never ride him again hes got a home for life but at 6 its just so young never to get ridden. Hopefully things are looking up for him and if he stays sound he can hopefully go back to some sort of ridden work, hes back at the large animal hospital on Monday for more IRAP so will see what they say.. Good luck with your guy.. isnt it such a blow when something happens to them so young.

I know exactly were you are coming from. When I had the vet out he said go with injections for fusion or retire him.Hes my first horse and I was gutted. When we went for xrays surgeon came up with hock fusion by surgery he has to have a month of box rest then a month restricted turnout. He has injured himself before ligament, tendon cannon bone bruising the list is endless. So to be told retire him at 6 was a real blow I have had him from 4 year old and like you wanted him for life.I hope your boy stays sound on njs I have heard great reports about its properties.Does your horse have arthritis all over or is it localised in one joint. If it happens to be the hock then there are more alternatives for you .If this surgery works which is looking very positive then my horse should be able to go back to every discipline.Hope everything goes well on monday let me know.My horse has his staples out thursday then I can graze him in hand.

Its been a huge nightmare.. My boy wont stay in! we even moved him yard and he jumped out the stable. I only had him 11 months before he went lame but i got him when i lost my confidence and was going to give up riding after my big hunter just scared the s**t out of me so much over the years and i just stopped riding. I ended up selling her and it broke my heart so much. Jorgi is just perfect and i love him to bits. His artiritis is in his fetlock joint. Hes a maxi cob. Hes out during the day with magnetic boots and i am sure they must have helped too but i cant be sure? I will let you know what happens on Monday.. I really hope everything works out okay for your boy. 6 is too young for all this to happen isnt it.. I could accept it if he was older but hes just a baby. Let me know how your boy goes.. Hope all goes well when the staples come out tomorrow. Will be thinking about you and your boy.. Think the 4 of us are in the same boat...
