OK, following on from a debate on my yard, out of interest I was wondering what sort of supplements you use!! I'm intrigued... Also why do you use the supplement?

I use a general purpose supplement as my horse is in restricted grazing/food to keep his weight down. He has plenty of hay but I find giving gim a general supplement keeps his coat looking shiny and healthy

I always use GP vits and mins, I clicked 'hoof' because I recently started feeding Happy Hoof (instead of a seperate hoof supplement and chaff) and I'm feeding a glucosamine supplement because he has injured his foot.

For an old boy - joint supplement, kossolian as a general and vitamin e supplement because he is on a high oil ration.

Have ticked breathing as she has that all the time - simultaneous viral and bacterial infection 4 yrs ago left my mare effectively broken winded. She would't be able to hunt or do fast work, but Secreta Pro and a good fitness/low dust regime means that she can be shown and do dressage.
She also has Saracen Equi Jewel for a week before a big competition - it is a bit like Blue Chip and the nutritionist says that while she doesn't need it all the time, a week's course gives her the extra stamina for a two-three day show.
Will also use electrolytes if this hot weather continues.
I'm lucky - she will eat anything

Well funnily enough this is what the debate was. ONe horse at ours is on a handful (SMALL handful!) of just hi fi and has cracked hooves, poor coat etc and she asked what I thought - I said it sounded like she was deficient and just needed a general purpose supplement. then someone else said thiers was ont he same diet and admitedly this horse is the picture of health, but she said "don't waste your money on vits and mins, paint his hooves with all this (expensive) stuff, treat his coat in this (expensive) shampoo etc.

But it's also pretty interesting to know, another firend is doing a thesis on supplements at uni soon (I think??) and is at the stage she's deciding what one(s) to look at closely, so this kind of helps her too! hehe. Cheers so far everyone for replies

I use Coff Less by equine america and a dyretic also by the same company. Coff Less because my mare had a chest infection over the winter despite being on haylage, shavings and turned out during the day, but she has not been quite the same since and it really helps to clear the mucus from her lungs. I use the dyretic because 3 years ago she suffered from lymphangitus and her leg now swells over night in her stable and just generally bgut since feeding a 5 day course of it and then once a week she has had fantastic clear legs. I ticked Antioxidant because it has a high level of strong oxidants in it and helps her to pee out the built up toxins in her legs and everywhere else. Her feed is a balanced feed of chaff and balancer which is already enforced with vits and minerals, oils and probiotic so i do not need to feed a general suppliment. Suppliments are difficult as it is hard to know when your horse is deficient in something and so many horese are over supplimented. My mare is only on the suppliments temporarily as she has specific reasons to be but otherwise is happy and very well on non.
