Ellie's leg seems to be healing really well
smile.gif
Since she's been going out each day, the swelling has reduced dramatically and now all there is is a bump on the edge of her tendon, which the vet is pretty certain is just internal bruising after having received such a hefty whack

There is no heat there now, and the chestnut has grown back, which is great

The vet said I can start to ride whenever I like, but me being me, I'm tending to err on the side of caution and am not going to ride her until the tendon swelling is down completely (I may be bonkers for disregarding my vet's opinion, but hey - I'd rather be safe than sorry!) What I am wondering now is whether I need to look into getting any kind of boots or wraps for her hind legs that may offer her some support for the damaged tendon? She has Stretch'n'Flex wraps in front anyway, but other than when we were showjumping and she had hind fetlock boots on, I've never really bothered putting anything on behind. I'm just wondering whether another pair of Stretch'n'Flex boots may do the job, or are they unlikely to offer much support, given that the injury itself was so high (just below the hock)?

Any suggstions?

Immediate thought, apart from pleased it's healing well, is the heat issue. Might be worth checking with the vet. Also, do you want support or protection?

I've got the Professionals Choice wrap boots, but find them a complete faff to put on (could well be that I'm incompetant!). Dizz has the Tri Zone Cross Country boots all round, but those were as pure protection because she can be a leg waving idiot

I'm definitely looking for support - without putting a hock boot on there's no way I can offer protection, its in such a weird place!

Will google the Prof. Choice boots, thank you

Heat that comes from work, as opposed to heat that comes from damage/healing

Ah, well of course I will be keeping close watch on it for any kind of heat or swelling once she does come back into work, and vet has said to ring him immediately if I am ever worried that there is heat when there shouldnt be! But she's been hooning around in the field this week and still come in with a cold leg, so fingers crossed!

Am loving the colours that the Prof. Choice boots come in!

Where did you get yours from? As most of them seem to be shipped from the US!

my little mare has torn her superficial flexor tendon and after a very long and steady bring back to work she wasjumping 3ft without any boots and she is happy as larry she hasnt done any jumping after a ligament injury (both on back legs) i have resisted putting boots on for the time beeing so it learns to support its self then the only time she will be wearing them is when i take her show jumping, jumping courses and thats because shes a complete mainiac i am thinking of investing in some professional chioce medicine boots for the support

if her leg has no heat in it dont be worried too much its if the swelling changes (my little mares swelling has remained but i have learned that it has a regular pattern swollen when the weathers hot or the grounds hard and small in the winter!)

i was like you putting off riding but the swelling might not completely go so as long as you take it steady and the vet is happy then give it a go you cant loose anything if you go for a little walk in a school

There'll always be heat from work, it's why the boot manufacturers often go on about how cool their boots are

You'll notice some warmth when the boots get taken off after work, it's another reason why I got the Tri Zone - they have air vents.

I got mine (purple!) from a saddler's, though I think I had to wait for them to be shipped from the USA (was two years ago now). Bought a pack of four, which made them slightly cheaper

I don't think any of them offer much support TBH.

If it's just a bump on the tendon (I assume it's been scanned?)
then you would be better off with the lightest boots you can find, just to protect from knocks.

If the tendon is damaged I don't believe any boot will offer any kind of useful support.

Hmm, that's kind of what I feared....the affected area is too high to gain much support from a boot, and unlikely to get knocked anyway so half of me wonders whether boots are needed at all? It's a tricky one!

MrsM - purple sounds good!

I rather like the look of some burgundy and black ones I've just found!!

Well, I was told by a good horse vet that they don't really do a lot.

I think the only exception is with lower leg joint arthritis, where the warmth of the boot helps a little and possibly does restrict the movement of an unstable joint slightly. I have no proof for that, it's just my observation having had an arthritic oldie for years. She wore SMB's all round but I think any pastern to knee neoprene boot would have worked as well.

Star had a bump on her tendon which scared me to death
frown.gif
I had it scanned and it was nothing, took about 10 days to go down completely. Daft mare did that triking into herself!

She has no leg problems at all apart from being a clumsy oaf and regularly thwacking herself. For that reason alone she wears some woof wear club boots and a pair of trizone overreach boots when working.

I think it's best to try to keep things simple!

xx

I'm definately all for simple

. The Pro boots are nice, but as I said, I found them a faff - others will no doubt disagree

The Tri Zone ones offer the protection from her other feet that are often freely swinging about!

PMSL that is exactly the problem wth Star, she is Crazy Legs Crane!

Boots do bugger all in terms of 'support'. All they will do is help prevent the odd knock/scratch. Save your money and put it towards something else!
