not cross ones do I need to fit padding at the spine to a surcingle on a fleece rug. We used to have jute rugs with them added but they had leather pads near the spine this one is not elasticated

I'd be more incline to take the fleece to a saddler & get cross surcingles fitted, or keep it as a cooler rug & only have it on when you're around so not having surgingles isn't a problem. However if you don't you do need something to keep the pressure off the spine.

I think it depends on how long you are using it for, a short time as a cooler or travelling it should be fine done up not too tightly without proper padding or just pop a bit of folded up padding/ towel under it, it is what we did for years before x surcingles were used.

thanks thought maybe a cheap sponge either side but it will only be used for drying off after a bath or keeping clean. Too mean to buy stuff when I already have it so will be very careful. I would rather spend my limited resources on things they need like quality tack and feed than on fripperies but they do get the best of everything necessary just a cheapskate when it comes to things I dont used very often
