I'm looking to put in a turnout area with a surface. I know with an arena you need to do the neccessary groundwork first, but how about your turnout areas?

What have you put under your surface please?

I would think you'd want the same drainage as an arena if you can afford it. The more you spend the better it should hold up.

Look forward to hearing what others have done as I have got to do something before next winter.

Membrane, drainage pipes and limestone just like an arena. The turnout areas take a lot of punishment. It was expensive but worth every penny, I don't know how I'd be coping without them in this weather, not to mention the horses!

I have three winter paddocks, three ponies and a field shelter in one - they live out 24/7; three warmbloods in another and two very large warmbloods in the third. The warmbloods all come in at night.

The turnout areas are each about 20 x 10m and open to the rest of the paddock so they can mooch around in the mud if they wish. The top surface is woodchip which has held up remarkably well for the eight or so years it's been down.

The surface in the ponies' paddock is now a bit mulchy and could do with replacing but I might try grassing it over in the spring.

No pics I'm afraid!

Thanks very much, my turnout area is only for one horse, do you think a 20x10 would suit for day turnout? We have more than enough viable grazing it's just too far from the house and the grazing by the house can't handle horses! ;)

Also we actually have a huge drain already IN the field, would it be a good idea to make the turnout area OVER that and drain in to it?
