My mare is having surgery on Wednesday as she has a lesion on her sdft on hind fetlock. I last saw the vet 3 weeks ago so not managed to ask questions about the operation.
Any idea on how much box rest she will need before she will be allowed controlled walking and then turn out in a small pen? I know every horse is different but would be good to hear of peoples experiences. The prognosis is good for being field sound and light hacking but more guarded about anything else. I will just be relieved for her to be field sound as she is 14 and I have had her 9 years.

It took me a year to get my boy sound and in work! I know they stay on complete box rest for 14days. Then start inhand walking which increases by 5 min every week. :-)

Great thanks for that info! I will be counting down the 14 days of complete box rest - poor thing has been stuck in for 5 weeks already. I can't wait to start taking her out for a walk and letting her have some inland grazing.
Can some of the walking be done on the walker?
I have all the time in the world before I get her back to ridden work. I would be quite happy to just get her field sound!

Mine was allowed to go for short hand grazes stright away (as long as not leaping about!) after stithces out was walking fro 5 mins increaseing by 5 each week after the scan once got past 20 min could do it ridden but was still box rest. In total she had 6 months in with controlled exercise then after that had 5 months controled exercise some turn out in small pen and box rest in total it was 11 ish months she developed lots of other issues totaly unrelated to the tendon issue and the recovery from it. that leg is one of her better ones and recovered well unfortunatly the other issues has meant she is now retired

Luckily my mare is super calm so hoping she will be allowed out in small turn out pen after a few months box rest. Luckily I'm moving to a yard which also rehabs horses so they have all the right facilities:)
Thanks for info! Hopefully the surgery will go well on Wed and then she can start on her recovery!
