There's a strong chance I may have leave the Northern Wastelands soon and take my cat and my knapsack "dahn sarf"!

So I have two possible jobs, one very close to Woking and the other in Horsham. If anyone is from there/lived there what's the horsey scene like? I only have one horse so I'm hoping that the livery won't cripple me!!

Any advice would be great as I've only been south of Birmingham on a couple of occasions!

Horsham is nice, very horsey, most the riding clubs round here base there stuff round here. A lot of local shows etc are round there

Bits of Woking are horsey, but definitely all, has some really nasty parts too (tis about 20 mins from me at the moment)

Horsham's quite a good location horsey wise as like Jess said, loads of RCs, big competition venues etc

Thanks Jess, that's good to know.
I have a young "bfg" horse so local shows/RC events would be right up my street in the next couple of years.

Horsham is close to the Surrey border, so it's more than feasible to live in Surrey and commute! I like Horsham. Not so keen on Woking - my friend lived and worked there and I wasn't overly impressed. Horsham is a nice little town, though. I sometimes go shopping there.

I live in Godalming which is pretty much half way between the two - and that's lovely! Nice and close to lots of riding clubs and a couple of big comp centres as well.
Agree that Woking's not that nice but you could live in a nicer town (of which there are lots) nearby and commute.

I expect woking will be more expensive to live as its only 23 minutes by train to waterloo. I live in guildford and love it, it has some very horsey areas - merrist wood arena which has comps normally at least twice a week, tweseldown just up the road, as is windsor. there are loads of comps within half an hour journey time.
horsham is a bit further out, but I really dont know it very well.
what sort of livery are you looking for ? part livery around woking is about £500 per month and full livery about £650 per month - dont know about diy.

Thanks everyone, the Surrey job is a bit north of Woking, in New Haw. From the blurb they give it sounds like a nice little village, but it could be awful for all I know!

I have spent the last few years with a 1hr each way commute, so I would ideally want to live, work and keep horse as close as possible - easier said than done!

Hi - I live in Woking and my best horsey friend lives in New Haw so I can give you the low down on a lot of the areas around here. Its not THAT bad (Woking itself isn't the most wonderful of places, but its safe and clean and easy to get to and out of). There are quite a few nice yards around here and a few competition centres.

I pay 30pw for DIY livery, and have paid up to 42pw but that included all hay and straw at a lovely big yard.

PM if you want more information about what's available around here in terms of yards, things to do and places to live!!! be more than happy to help you out!!!

DIY I should think. I have DIY at the moment (but hay, straw, grazing etc is included in the price) and I pay less than £120 a month!!!

ETA thanks Riverboy - I may take you up on that. Will know how likely the move is in a couple of weeks!

Ok I am not that far from horsham in an area known for high livery prices. Mine costs £360 a month full livery monday-friday, DIY saturday/sunday!!

So don't panic, if I were you I would find out exactly where the job is, and phone round some local yards asking for prices. This will give you a better idea.

Horsham is a nice part of the world in my opinion

I'm from Midhurst (West Sussex / Surrey borders). Lovely area on the South Downs with plenty of hacking/stables/events going on. Trains to London from Haslemere just over 40 mins and it is near Guildford for shopping :-)

Pity I'm stuck in Portsmouth finishing my MA... gah!

Oh, golddustsara you make it sound lovely!! I am finishing my PhD at the moment, hence applying for jobs. You have my sympathies!

Out of intertest are you applying to the Vet Labs in New Haw? I have two very good friends who work there, an ex - soon to be current again housemate and a horse friend (vet & animal care supervisor) who I am sure would also be able to give you some more info on things!

Once you know let me know and I can give you yard numbers, RC numbers and letting agencies that are actually decent, I moved here from Kent 2.5yrs ago so know how scary it all is and met some lovely people who helped me and I spent ages ringing round all the yards and stuff and being uber organised still have all the numbers filed!!!

I live in SW London and horse is on London/Surrey borders (DIY). Personally, I much prefer Horsham, you're near Sussex and Surrey and if you want to go out/go shopping or whatever Brighton isn't far at all, like a 20-30 min drive down the motorway. I would say its more horsey as well - I don't know Woking that well really, but I don't think its as rural, and as nice in my opinion. If you wanted to live somewhere nice and work in Horsham, you could live in Brighton and commute, theres loads of places near Brighton where you could keep your horse - Sussex in general is really horsey.

I live in New Haw and keep my horse on DIY about 5 miles away. Livery is less than £100 pcm but hay and straw etc is on top of that and we've no off road hacking.

There are plenty of yards around though from small places tucked away to bigger yards that hold events. New Haw is really quite tiny and there is not much going on but you're only a short drive away from Woking, Guildford, Kingston which are all great for shopping. Would say it is also cheaper to rent/buy than some neighbouring villages, which is why we moved here!

I live near Woking and think it's quite a nice place (have never been to Horsham). It has a good shopping centre! The area is quite horsey arpund there, especially around Chobham and Horsell commons which are fantastic for hacking and then Windsor great park is only a bit north. There are loads of yards around, so plenty to choose from! DIY does tend to be a bit dearer than you're used to

I think mainly because it is quite close to London.

I live in Woking too - not picturesque but way better place to commute from/shop etc than Horsham. My yard is only 5 mins from Merrist Wood and they have competitions/events on all the time, there are also plenty of riding clubs and other events nearby.

If you also enjoy socialising not just horses, I think it is a better location to move to.

PM me if you want any further info

OMG, so many people from Woking & New Haw, where were you all when i lived there!!

OP, Woking isn't that bad its just you average town really and New Haw is quite nice, relatively quiet IMO, i lived there for 8yrs and never had any bother, plus there is a massive M & S and Tesco and a amazing Indian just down the road in West Byfleet

I can give you the number of a fab livery yard about 6 miles out of New Haw, all year round T/O, good school and decent size stables.

PM if you are interested

Sussex all the way! I live in Surrey now but have previously spent a few years in sussex, and its much nicer, better hacking, loads of horsey people and I found it to be much friendlier than surrey in general in horsey terms, esp if your on either the bsja or bd circut (can't comment on RC really, but did meet some nice people from some, esp. Ardingly rc). I love it down there and would go back in a heartbeat. Expect 7 day part livery to be about £100 a week. Your best basing yourself slightly south of horsham horse wise as then your right in the middle for sands farm, hickstead, ardingly, pyecombe, royal l. and a a few other, golden cross is a medium drive away too. Horsham as a town is also much nicer than woking, which is a bit grey.

Wow, thanks for all the info everyone. It's been super helpful. I've got an interview next week and will hopefully have another the week after so I'll warn you all if I'm headed south!

I was born and brought up in Surrey (Dorking area) and I lived briefly in Warnham (just outside Horsham) on a yard, Sands was just around the corner so handy for competing etc.

However, having lived for the past 10 years or so in North Somerset I found the area really built up and hated all the traffic, but then that's just a personal taste.
