Please help put my mind at rest.

After a whole winter of doing normal horsey things Harry did his first show of the season last weekend!!!!

Was looking forward to being out again this weekend then on Wednesday he was kicked on the left hind, got two nice puncture wounds one just below the hock and the other just above his fetlock.

The following morning was sound but cuts were weepy, cleaned them and turned him out as usual. Then this morning his whole lower leg (from the hock down) was massively swollen. Hosed down again and got the vet.

Vet has done flexion tests and has decided that he has most likely chipped a bone and put on bute.

Just wondering how long this is going to take to setle down, also is it worth me bandaging overnight (stabled)to try and reduce the swelling????

Cookies to all that made it this far x x x

i had a horse with a chipped bone but also a hairline fracture and he was on boxrest for 6 weeks but that was because of the hairline fracture so that's not really much help sorry,

as for bandaging i would

My horse has a bone chip at the moment, he got kicked xmas day just below the stifle. They x rayed and confirmed bone chip and he is now off until about september the vets have said

Dont know about bandaging as I cant bandage mine because of the location but he is in at night and just in a small 20ft x 20ft pen in the day so he cant run around and aggrivate it.
He's being xrayed again next week so fingers x'ed

CathernineF, that must be horrible!! Couldn't imagine Harry out of action for so long. fingers x'ed Was your horse lame???

I'm trying to stick to horses will be horses but when the culprit goes to the event this weekend and mine doesn't I'm going to keep out of the way!!!!

I really feel for you, my horse was kicked on his knee on tuesday and the vet came yesterday to open and flush out the would as it was very swollen and possibly infected.
He had a good poke about and said he was 95% sure there wasn't a bone chip but he will x ray him if the swelling hasn't gone down by monday.
He is completely sound which is what I'm clinging on to at the moment. But I'm feeling a bit depressed about it now tbh.

Hope your boy is over the worst and it's not a chipped bone.
I would bandage overnight btw, or put leg wraps on. I have some magnetic one's I've been putting on Axey.

Seahorse we are in the same position, I got exactly the same action plan off the vet this morning!!

I feel a bit gutted tbh, he's very mannerly around other horses other horse just spun round and would not stop kicking out!!

I was only thinking the other day if he gets some good results this year I might advertise and see what comes up. aarrgghh

he was lame when he first did it only for about a week or so (think that was due to the cut more than anything) came sound a weeks after that so was riding him, turned out as normal etc. wasnt til i did a jumping clinic nearly 2 weeks later he couldnt jump (chip obv only floated and hurts when leg is flexed jumping) so vet came straight out and x rayed and found it.
i think the prob is as well its location they cant really do anything to it like bandaging etc.
He hasnt had any bute apart from 2 days when he initially did it. There was no heat/swelling or anything which is why it wasnt picked up earlier. I was going to BE him this year as well as he did so well unaff last year

least I can save some money

Yes it looks like we are.
I'm just back from the yard now feeling very depressed, I took Axey for a little walk to have a nibble of grass and he totally went mad, leaping about like an idiot and dragging me everywhere.
When I finally got him back to the yard he didn't look quite as sound as he did before

I put his magnet wraps on and put some valerian in his feed too.
I hope he's going to be ok.

My horse has a bone chip from a kick middle on November, he was turned out on his own for the first month and was allowed to be ridden in walk from January. We had our first canter today and although not 100% sound is 99% there.

I'm surprised your vet hasn't x-rayed. my horse had regular x-rays to check his progress. But he was very unsound and was on antibotics for nearly a month.

My horse got kicked on his cannon bone, he was taken into vet hospital, had full leg supportive bandage on & was cross tied for a week. Got home after a week, heavily bandaged for 3 weeks as they hoped the chip would reabsorb. Unfortunately when the bandages came off he chip detached and he had to have an operation to have it removed.
I am really surprised your vet hasnt xrayed the leg

Change vets.
Your horse should definetly be xrayed, and if a chip is discovered an injection to protect the joint should it move.
Re xray after a months box rest, and if it hasnt attached itself somewhere have it taken out.

Christ! You need to get a second opinion on this ASAP!!

Puncture wounds that get infected around a joint can be extremely dangerous!! Because the infection can seep into the bone so quickly!

I would do as others have said on here and get Xrays ASAP. My horse came in from field 4 weeks ago with a little cut on his leg, was very lame though.

Luckally vet was at the yard to xray another horse that day and brought the equipment over to my horse. Turned out he had been kicked in the field and has a chunk of bone chipped off the top of his Tibia. He was cross tied for the first week, then had to go to Newmarket for more xrays and now is on 2 months box rest, further xrays after Easter then vet will decide what the next step is depending on how it has repaired.

So what I am trying to say is from a llttle cut on his leg it turned out to be a break, better to be safe than sorry and have those xrays done!!!

Hi all, i know its been a while since this was posted but my horse was kicked back in july. I treated it just like any other minor injury as the cut was about 2cm and she wasnt lame at the time. Next day she was lame, and her leg was very swollen just below the knee down. vet came out and was a little concerned, referred her straight away!
Turns out her cannon bone was slightly chipped. Cut a long story short. She was on box rest and light turnout for a few months, with regular check-ups etc. I got the all clear in November to get her back into gradual work. All had been going so well untill 3 weeks ago she went lame, got the vet out who said the x-ray shows a possible cist in the wound area. They said to give her a week or so to see how she goes as the x-ray is very simular to prev one (she could have slipped or knocked her leg hard, so they said!) Anyway a week later she was sound! So again, i bring her back into work sticking to walk! Tonight she comes in from field lame again!!!! Their out monday to nerve block her leg, hoping to get the the bottom of this!
Shes only a 5 yo, we was both doing so well. Just fealing really down about it all. would be nice to hear from you guys about ur progress and your thoughts about this?
