Don't know if anyone else has posted about this but there is a suspected case of FMD in Petersfield in Hampshire. Set to be confirmed in the next 2days and restriction zones to be put in place
Oh dear is it coincidence that right bang in the middle of this new zone is the Fair Oak XC course which has recently been holding competitions. Are we all being too blase about moving our horses around? - I include myself in this as we took horses to the recent SJ/SC event at Fair Oak.
if there is good biosecurity in place then that is all that defra is doing and all that we can reasonably be doing
a friend of mine lives right in the edge of the egham zone and it would be so easy for defra/surreycc/localcouncil to put down disinfectant areas on roads but they haven't - I've asked
local show round us last sunday there were mats at the gate and a bit space round the side so that scared horses could go past without causing a road hazard if they couldn't get over the mats
the number of cars (including 4x4s) that went ROUND the mats or as much as they could because there was a 2inch lip of wood containing the disinfectant mats, plastic and straw was unbelievable
so how can they expect people to obey footpath closures when they won't even drive their precious cars over mats
I don't know what the situation is now but I was traveling back to ireland last weekend (16th Sept) after the lastest outbreak and there were no precautions in place at the Uk ferry ports! when we arrived in ireland, all the cars and vehicles were sprayed. I just thought it strange that nothing was being done on the Uk side. It was the same in the last outbreak. i was living in the Uk and the airports had mats etc for the international flighted but nothing was in place for the domestic flights.
it just doesn't seem to be getting through what a catastropic (Sp?) affect this disease has on farmers (present company excluded!)
I was supposed to be taking Marius to Liphook for some tests/x rays on Wednesday, and rang just now to cancel, expecting them to be closed to visits. They said they were open as usual. My yard, just south of Petersfield, texted me to say that no travelling was allowed.

I keep my horse at a college in hertfordshire and we have been banned from moving horses until the FMD has all cleared up to reduce the risk of the sheep and cows at the college contracting the disease. We have mats to drive over on the way into the college too. Just read another post that now says hertfordshire is now a risk area
not quite sure what that entails (sp?) though. It is all so confusing...
