A friend of mine arrived at her field near Coates, Peterborough on Friday morning to find one of her ponies with a very large slit across his throat line and obviously loads of blood. Vet was called and pony was stitched up. Although not 100% confirmed, vet believes that it was caused by a knife. Pony is kept in a post and rail paddock (no flesh or hair found on the fencing) with no objects that could have caused such a clean extensive slit across the throat.

Police are involved as a precaution and story will also be printed in local paper tomorrow. I think all concerned are hoping it was just an unexplained injury rather than anything sinister.

As I said in title, this is a suspected knife attack and therefore I do not wish to cause unnecessary panic. Just might be an idea just to do an extra check on your horses if you keep them near this area as my friend is devastated by what has happened.

I am off to do my own horses now but will be back online later.

Can I ask if this is someone and a pony you know?

I ask because I received a phone call 11pm Friday night from a friend saying a friend of hers had put on her facebook account that 2 horses had been stabbed in the throat in the area - one in Benwick and one in Wimblington and that one had died.

I called the police to confirm this and they told me that no such incidents had been reported.

Yesterday I received various calls and texts from other horsey friends with similar stories but like Chinese whispers it changed each time, down to one person having a road and village (not Coates!)

Another horsey friend called the police yesterday who again said no horse attacks have been reported...

Yes the lady who owns the pony near Coates is a friend of mine, she used to keep her horses at the same livery yard as me. I have spoken to her today and she asked me to let as many people know in the area as I can but obviously it is only a suspected attack as mentioned in my post, we are all praying that it was just a freak accident.

I will admit that I also heard rumours about the pony near March but as I do not know that owner or any facts, I have not said anything in my post regarding it. I do not think that it is fair to do so for either the owner's sake or everyone elses sake i.e. to cause panic.

I will just stick to the information that I do know.

I have heard the same story so have asked some friends who are police and initially they hadn't heard anything but have since been told by someone who works in the control room for the police that there have been three attacks on horses between whittlsey and march. 2 were apparently treated by a vet and the third died.
Hope this is not true and don't wish to cause any fear or panic but it is very worrying if these attacks are happening. :(
