Hiya, so I brought my mare 2 months ago. Since then she seems to have changed shape quite a bit. She is a TB so naturally slim yet now almost her top half is slim yet her belly is bulging. She has been wormed and had a worm count done which all came back fine. I brought my non horsey OH over who joked she could be pregnant and now having asked a few people at the yard they sorta ummm and awww that yeah she is a funny shape. So now I think I’m beginning to get paranoid that she could be. I will post some photos from today and also a comparison to the day I picked her up. Just wanting people’s opinions. At the moment she still has a shadow of ribs showing (from having no additional feed in old home) even with the big belly. The field photos have been taken within the last week and the stable one the day I got her.

How much is she being ridden now? And what was her exercise regime like before you got her? Just wondering if it's muscles losing their elasticity now, if she's having an easier time. Also, how much fresh grass is she getting, and what other feed? Could just be an extreme grass belly maybe? Are there any strange twitches/movements in her belly? And does her belly stick out more one side than the other? Any sign of bagging up or waxing teats? Easiest way to find out is to get a vet out to check. Good luck, and let us know the answer!

So before I got her she had been out of work since Feb and so turned out to grass without feed etc and came in condition pictures in stable. Since then she is now being exercised 5-6 times a week including lunge, hacking, pole work and I now feed a scoop of condition cubes, chaff and a high fibre pellet. She is turned out 24/7 on ok grazing but over weekend I did keep her in to see if she was grass belly but didn’t notice much change. Her udder still looks normal and is something I am now paying more attention to. To ride she is pretty perfect, does shake her head and drag her toes when she gets tired on hilly hacks so have decreased length to support her fitness rebuild after being at grass for so long previously.
