Noticed my horse was lame today. Eventually discovered that on the inside of his hind leg at the top next to his sheath was swollen and very hot. I cooled it with water for a little while but it didn't make much of a difference. I only have him on loan and his owners don't believe in calling the vet out. Is there anything anyone can suggest to do?

Time off and bute (vet should be happy to authorise that over phone if they know you and trust your judgement)

Sometimes though a reaction to fly bite can cause heat/swelling in that area.

Hi I was just wondering what the outcome was with your horse as mine has exactly the same sort of thing by the sound of it? I brought her out of the stable last night to ride and she was clearly very uncomfortable walking on her hind leg. On inspection I noticed a long swollen area down the inside of her thigh about an inch or two wide? Vet coming out today, but am worried sick it's something torn! Did you find out what yours was? Hope it turned out ok in the end

Hi my horse came in exactly as u describe, hardly able to walk very lethargic he also jad a lump at the top of the inside of his thigh near his sheath. I had physio and vet who diagnosed a torn gracilis muscle in his groin. Prescribed bute cold hosing and rest. This qas the first may bank hoilday and he is now sound but still has a small swelling. Physio is due out next week to work with him
