Hi.
Just found out by ultra sound that the conclusion is my horse has sprained one of her hind suspensorys. The ultra sound showed the suspensory to be slightly bigger than the other one.The horse was lame when turning the corner tightly on the left reign ,felt short to me when i was on her and felt a little better when they nerve blocked it.
So the horse is having 6 months of now and we will see after that.
Has any one had any problems like this and what have the outcomes been like .And what route have you gone down for treatment rest, shock wave, operation if you get me.
any help advice greatly appreciated.
x
edited to say the ultra sound showed no lesions or holes on suspensory

Give a recommended equine physio a ring - they would be the best person to give advice. The blood supply to ligments is very poor so they are quite tricky to work with I think.

Bummer - :(

Hi, if its a sprain with evidence of thickening on ultrasound but no tear the prognosis is not so bad with the right rehab which involves lots of in hand walking on hard surfaces, no sand school or similar surface work, no lunging etc. In my experience it is important to keep them moving actively walking on a good surface, this is the key to the fibres recovering well.

Fourteen months ago (October 2009) one of my endurance horses did a very bad hind suspensory ligament (A hole as big as a golf ball).

He had all the normal treatment plus Plasma transfer NO operation at all. He was allowed to be in a small area around one of my stables (He does not do box rest)
Both hind legs were bandaged. Slowly we were allowed to extend the area and then walking in hand before weeks of walking ridden adding a small amount of trotting until we had built the trotting up to half an hour.

August this year he completed a 65k (40 miles) endurance ride over different going. He completed the ride in style and remains sound to this day.

The ligament healed well and we have had no problem since.

With the correct rehab there is no reason for your horse to be back to normal

Thats a happy ending! Can he jump or do dressage?

My TB mare hit the jackpot and did ALL 4 suspensories! It wasnt anything that she had done just the fact that she grew funny. She had holes in the top of them (just below the knee), and the hinds were signifcantly worse than the front. Her problems werent that noticible at first because it was on all 4 legs and she had always been like it. i hasten to add she was only 5 at the time! We had shockwave treatment on all 4 legs, with controlled turnout (as it was the middle of summer) and in hand walking for about 4 months and then we turned her away last year from October to May this year.

Amazingly she has made a 99% recovery behind and a 90% recovery in front. The fronts didnt heal as well because she had heart bar shoes on the fronts for the signs of navicular she displayed, and she kept pulling them off.

She is now back in work and is (touch wood) 100% sound and is happily hacking and working lightly in the menage. And we hope to start jumping her again in the summer!
