Cant believe this but my horse who has just had spavin op went really lame this week .Vet came out today and he has done his suspensory ligament and has a splint.I dont know what to do..Ive had him 3 years in nov and hes done curb ligament .tendon cannon bone injury various over reach has terrible collapsed heels and now spavins and suspensory .Two weeks ago he stood on a 4 inch nail and had puncture wounds. He is a fantastic horse nature wise but I dont know how much more we can both take .I cant keep throwing money at him but also want the best for him.I ll get him scanned next week to see what the vets prognosis is .
I just feel hes never going to come sound hes only 7 any ideas on his long term future with suspensory ligament.

You can join the clique that Halfstep and I have set up... the "Unluckiest horse in the world" clique

I think you just about qualify although we do usually stipulate two GAs before entry, but I think we can make an exception

Do you know where the suspensory ligament has been damaged and what leg it is?

Is he on box rest now?

Sorry to hear about all his problems

Regards the suspensory ligament it really depends on the extent of the damage. My girl sprained hers, had a few spa treatments, 3 months off then brought back into work slowly and (touch wood) she's been fine and it's over 12 months ago.

Apparently, the spa doesn't change the outcome of recovery although it does speed up the recovery process.

Are you on livery or do you keep him at home? Just wondered cos my TB mare, who was PTS a few years ago was always getting injuries until I moved her to another yard and then injuries just didn't happen.

Might have been coincidence but the land was better at 2nd yard and she was generally happier with routine.

Hope the prognosis is good - fingers crossed

Front right leg the only leg he hasnt injured lol.Its Behind the knee and there is a splint.Vet/surgeon for spavin said to restrict his paddock but I am going to ring my regular vet for 2nd opinion on that cold hose and support.I havent been able to get him on a trailer since surgery vet wants him to go to surgery for scan although I would prefer portable.Just phoned the lovely e and l who have always paid out !!!!!!!!Bloody horse why do we get so attached

Say no more a tb that the same as mine.diy yard and I hav been trying to move waiting for new yard across the road but he is really happy there.

Tazz did hers when she was 13, she had 6 week box rest, was about 3 month after that before she was totaly back to normal (bsja). she's 23 now, we still jump although I've noticed over the last year that after working on hard ground the leg she did when she was 13 swells a little although she doesn't go lame on it. so I won't jump her on hard ground and we don't trot to much on the roads, although she is 23 now so I can't really complain! After those 4 months off, I've not really noticed any lasting probs with it.

my boy had PSD and spavin in his off hind last year and he's come good. pretty much gave him 6 months off - just walkingout in hand at the end and then started him off hacking etc, had my first lesson on him last night 18 months after he was diagnosed and he was great- so there is hope.

With suspensory depends if its inflamed, sprained or torn for the prognosis.

Hope he's not too bad and a bit of box rest will sort him.

I might be a bit old school here, so those that are more in the know than I am please correct me as I have more experience with PSD in the hind legs. I was under strict instructions to keep her on complete box rest for 6 weeks and then start 'controlled exercise' for a further six weeks.

Unfortunately, this along with four lots of shock wave therapy was not enough for my mare so she had to undergo the operation. However, I believe this is not an option for fore limb suspensories.

if it's just below the knee then that sounds like PSD. it has a better prognosis in the forelimbs than the hindlimbs, but is still generally treated with strict box rest along with shockwave treatment then controlled exercise. just rest alone tends to make them sound until they restart work then they go lame again. how has it been diagnosed? it needs nerve blocks and ultrasound to diagnose with any certainty.

Scans next weekand nerve blocks if I can load him.He hasnt loaded since surgery in jan for spavins. Then decisions on treatment. He needs to keep mobile for hock to fuse thats probably why vet said restricted turnout. He did knee flexation with pressure on back of knee and found soreness and the splint.Hes had box rest already this year plus 2 lots last year .

My mare did her suspensory ligament last July, she had restricted exercise (she wandered about a cattle court) for 3 months then started walking work, 20 mins a day for a month. We recently scanned the ligament and if was found to have healed. Adequan is good for ligament injuries though it depends on your vet as to whether or not they'll recommend it. Length of time horse needs off will also depend on the type of tear and you won't know that till you scan.

My sympathies are with you though - the above horse is tremendously accident prone and is at the moment lame (though no-ones sure why!) If you have somewhere that you can turn him out (create a stable sized paddock) then he's likely to be happier and less bored than if he was totally confined. Depends on your horse though and ultimately you know him better than anyone.

Hes out tonight in restricted paddocks about 6 interlocking so he can graze and walk about, he cant run around .This is vets recommendation until we scan.He is thinking about injecting with something maybe this is the adequan I will look into it thanks for that.

I think poor cellie has to be inaugurated as an honorary member of the "Unluckiest horse on the planet" clique. Sorry cellie. I think in your case the normal requirement of two GA's can be waived.

Fingers crossed for your horse. I do hope that it isn't as bad as you think and that he will be ok.

((((hugs))))

xx

Well thank you for that there are a few injuries that I havent added which might help like when he caught his bit in the bolt on the stable door and proceeded to throw the door 10 ft in the air just missing me and my daughter.
Hugs are appreciated and tranquilisers as well any spare!!!!!

My horse did his suspensory 14 months ago. Kept him on box rest for ten months then moved to yard with horse walker but two months ago they paid out for loss of use and he has been turned away. I hope he will come back and do some dressage and hacking but He will never jump a big track again. He did not tear it it was just inflamed but did not respond well to rest etc.
