My mare is in her 20's now, and a few days ago I noticed a hand-sized lump right under her belly, slightly to the right hand side and towards the back. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort at all, and the lump is reasonably firm, not completely solid. She did have some swelling around her udders which made me think it might be an infection, but that has now gone. It has been suggested that it's a hernia, reaction to an insect bite, fat deposit, mastitis...etc and I've been watching her like a hawk since I noticed it and had to be restrained from calling out the vet straight away (which I still feel inclined to do!) although she seems fine in herself

Yesterday I noticed that the lump appeared slightly bigger, and had moved, and is now much further forward, more towards her girth

and that she had done very few poos in her stable and in the field. I'm really concerned! Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any ideas what it is?? Or back me up on calling out the vet asap or back everyone else up that I'm over reacting!?

I have taken some photos which I will upload tonight if that helps?

It may be nothing more inocuous than a bite of some sort - but I agree with you regarding the vet, and I would be inclined to give them a buzz.

Same as Amy! At the least, they can put your mind at rest just by a phone call to them - the worse, that they feel the need to visit - but it will put your mind at rest that you have done something. Also, I think, at that age, something is better caught earlier than later, you have a better chance to correct it then.

hi if the lump has gotten bigger then its possible its a hernia, and over work can cause it strain (much like a human) but if it has moved positions then it is most likely to be an insect bite! (my horse has a hernia)
