Swabbing for strangles

The swab test is of no use, a blood test is essential, I don't know what you mean, how much is it? The largest part of the cost is down to the vet visit.
Three swabs need to be taken over a period for the testing procedure to be of any value.
A negative result just means no bacteria were found on the day of the test. It does not mean the horse does not have strangles.

If you suspect stangles, isolate the horse immediatley and ensure all other horses which he has been in contacted with are isolated.
The symptoms are so mild in many cases that they are unnoticed.
All horses in the herd need to have their temperatures taken twice a day.
This is a herd problem. You need veterinary advice.

Oh, and by the way, people will tell you it is not a life treatening disease and that too much hype and secrecy surrounds it: let me tell you, that for those who are adversely affected, it can be life threatening, it can cause dreadfull illness and it can cost a lot of money. At a recent outbreak,, spread by ignorance and deceit, 28 out of 52 horse and ponies were found to have the disease or have had the disease, the cost must have been over £10,000 for the owners of the stables, this does not take in to account the costs borne by horse owners individually.
