We have some haylage left but with having one horse and a piny now tge weather is warming uo we wouldnt get through a bale before it goes off. We have heard if somone who wants haylage and has small bales of hay and cabt get hold of any haylage. So I aas th8nking of doing some kind of trade. How many small bales of hay would you think to be reasonable amount to swap for large round bales of haylage? We can keep them for winter so dont particularly need them out the way.

Thanks, Im not sure what to do OH said we should be keeping it fir next year as he thinks there will be even more ofca shortage than this year. Wish I had a crystal ball at times.

10-12 sounds about right.

If yours is decent, I would be inclined to keep a lot. Ours hasn't been wonderful in general this year. We've just gone onto hay and its not great either!

We only have three bales left, they are good as in no weeds, not mouldy, etc, but for some may not be suitable as it seems to not give many calories. Great for us though as we can feed it our little fattie welsh adlib and still managed to get her to lose a bit of weight this winter by controlling hard feed. It as also done my mare who is difficult to keep weight on, we have just had to feed her 3 x a day to make up the calories. So for us has been a god send with only having the two and them having completely different needs.
I will be kicking myself though if it goes off before next winter if I don't swap it. Hmmm.

I wouldnt keep the bales, there is a chance the bales could get damaged & go off & then you are left with nothing. Also i was told by a farmer friend you shouldnt keep them any longer than May of the following year they are baled (though how right that is i dont know).
