Hi there,
I have a truely stunning 16.3hh TBxWB 6 year old mare that I bought about 8 months ago. She's sure to go BE Intermediate (loose schooled over 4"4) but I'm simply overhorsed. Bags of talent but she is a bit too sharp and sensitive for me and I'm beginning to loose my nerve with her which is no good for either of us. Silly buy (for me) but was drawn in by her fab paces and gorgeous looks!! (have piccies)

I'm reasonably competent but after the birth of my baby two years ago I'm not as brave or confident as I once was! Hence, silly buy on my part. Any decent rider would soon whip her into touch and I'm gutted I can't crack her. However, I must be realistic.

Is swapping an option - as the market is sooo bad!!?

I'm looking for something not really older than 8, around 16hh mark, must be straightforward and honest and has to have the ability to get around a BE novice track. I'm willing to put a bit more money on top for the right horse.

Has anyone done this? What are your views/experiences? Any ideas for contacts? Many thanks.

Hi many years ago I did this and swapped a capable handful of a mare for a young but quiet cob and it worked really really well. Last year I nearly had the same situation again but unfortunately it didn't work out as the horse I had was a bit too small for the owner of the one I wanted so swap with.

Best place to look is http://www.thehorseexchange.com/ as you can search under the advanced search option for 'swaps'.

Best of luck

Editited to say on first glance this may fit your bill; http://www.thehorseexchange.com/?Horse/Details/forAd/116362

I've almost done it, turned out the pony I had to swap wasn't big enough but I ended up buying the horse they had anyway. It was the other party who had advertised, the ad was in the local Freeads. I'd do it again if I found the right horse to swap for my far-too-good-for-me four year old. Need a nice chunky thing for my OH instead.

Saves the "oo, there's a nice horse, but I haven't sold mine yet".

Well I'd swap with you - got the horse that matches your description except he's 13yrs old so probably more experienced than what you want :( Am looking to sell him to get a youngster and start all over again. The market is very difficult. I thought I'd sell mine immediately as he's the most honest, easy eventer / showjumper out there.

I did! Swap set up from this forum, I swapped a well bred mare for a spotty stallion, mare went to stud, stallion stopped stud work and commenced competition career! Its worked well for us! :-) Pm if you would like any further info!

Thank you all for getting back to me with great advice/information.

Magicmelon - ideally, I was looking for something a bit younger but in this market, I wouldn't rule anything out! Could you please PM me with a bit more information? My young mare is totally sound, by the way, as I'm not trying to pass on a dud to someone else!

Unfortunately, my other older mare who I was competiting at PN and aiming for a novice with will probably never return to work due to problems with her kidneys, hence purchase of the younger mare.

Therefore, I am ideally looking for something that would do a 100/novice next year to replace her. But, the cost of buying a horse competiting at PN is just silly money for me.

Once again, thanks for getting back to me - it's just such as tricky time to sell and swapping seems to make sense.

I swapped my second pony who was welsh section D chestnut mare, who I'd outgrown for a 3yr old 15hh DWB x Cob who had a lot of issues (the woman I swapped her with had rescued her from a sales). It worked out well in the end for us, however I know that she did end up selling the Sec D on, not sure where she ended up though but she did have the tendency to be a typical chestnut mare!
