I have advertised my horse for sale (reluctantly) and one of the calls I have is from a lady who would like to swap her younger horse (5 to my 8) who hasn't made the height required. Mine grew too big!

I quite like the idea but am confused as to who would own what if you see what I mean.

What do you think to both swapping and the ownership issues?

would think that if both horses really suited , you would just agree a price that you both felt was fair and the same then exchange bills of sale but no money (or you could pay her then she could give it back!)

swapping horses is a ok idea but just make sure you dont get your 'moneys' worth if you know what i mean? you dont what to get a horse worth about 1000 for a swap of your horse of 5000. Ownership issues i s'pose would basically be like buying a horse, swapping passports and inform the passport agency of the new ownership. xx

I swapped horses last year, it is the same as buying/selling. As guinness states everything is changed over as normal, just ensure you have receipts stating exactly what has been swapped

Sounds like a good solution as long as the horses are worth about the same and her horse suits you and would be one you would actually buy if/when you were looking to replace the horse you are selling. Make sure you get the passport and any registration documents and have ownership changed on them.

sounds like a good idea but just make sure you have this other horse vetted to make sure this horse is free from any health issues.
But i would think about it long and carefully before you commit yourself to a deal that you may regret later.

banjo, did u get your boy from a lady called sue day a few years back? he looks very much like a horse they had there of the same name?

sorry to interupt thread!

Many years ago I swapped a saddle for a pony. Both items were valued by both of us and we agreed that the price for both was comparable, so we just did a straight swap. I gave her a bill of sale for the saddle and she signed over the breed papers of the pony to me. Simple.

Make sure to vet the horse etc first. Someone wanted to swap a horse for YOs pony - the horse looked fine etc and worked well but when it was vetted the vet picked up on a heart and lung condition that the owner knew about and limited the horse's life by several years.
