My horseis fully clipped and fairly fit for regular hunting. We had a long day yesterday and this morning he came out of the stable stiffly. The reason I found, eventually, is where he has looser skin between his front legs, in the fold of that the skin has rubbed, or sweat has been trapped and it is now oozing and clearly painful to walk. I don't think the skin is actually broken and no blood is visible
He also hunted earlier in the week and was well washed off and groomed since, so I am sure that it isn't something that has been building up and in the dark last night, when he was washed off, I saw nothing of concern.
I washed and cleaned the area this morning and put veterinary wound powder on as my thought was to dry it up, but now I am wondering if I shouldn't have used some sort of gel or barrier cream?
I have derma gel, antibacterial cream, sudocream, ordinary petroleum jelly all to hand, would any of these be a better alternative?
Also when the initial soreness has gone would salt water washes help to harden the skin?
Will reducing turnout and exercise help or hinder healing ?
Any one any experience of this and how long it may take to heal, or how to stop it happening ?
Thank you
