Sweating one side of body only

My pony is 16 ish years, grass kept, a bit overweight at present and seams to sweat more on one side to the other. He has started his winter coat and the weather has been exceptionally hot lately but the sweating doesn't seem right to me. Any ideas ?

What kind of activity is he doing when he sweats? Which part of his body in particular, neck, under the saddle, behind the saddle?

When I was catching him he didn't want to come in and chased around a bit, he was sweaty while I was doing him. Also on a really quiet hack he sweated up. My friends horse also sweated but not so much and my pony was mainly on the right hand side from the top of his neck down to his shoulder

Is it under his mane that he is sweating more?

Yes it is under his mane and I tried to convince myself that he was just to hot underneath it but the sweating goes down his neck and shoulder also
