Daisy is now loading without a second thought and travels nicely with only the odd snort but is still getting sweated up. I'm going to try her with some of the van windows open next time to get a little through draft. Would you try a one off calmer for travelling until she gets used to it or just keep going as we are and hope that she'll be alright?

If she is sweating at the moment it may just be the weather - mine is usually fin but really sweated up yesterday and we hadn't gone far but its so humid at the mo

I don't think its the weather- Pip travelled through 38 degree heat and 2 days on the box and didn't sweat atall. Sorry.
I would have all windows ect. open that you can, certainly no rug on and prehaps give her some electrolytes before and after so she will recover quicker when you are at the show.

snap, ours are sweating aswell because its humid and we never travel them in rugs....Sorry but slight rant..i hate it when some equestrian people feel the need to rug their horses head to toe in summer when travelling. Sweat rug topd with cooling rug toppd with travelling rug and very thick double bandaged travelling boots. Its doing more hamr than good and most of the time i feel its only for shoe and they just 'want' to do it. and then they wonder why their horses comes out like a bar of soap, and they blame the horse for being a 'bad traveller'. Im sorry but the truth is, some horses just dont need rungs at all when travelling most dont. The only draft theid get when travelling is if abnormally the window was wide open on a trailer!!...sorry just my opjunion..rant over!

but answering your question, i dont think you should worry, its quite humid and most horses heat up when there is some activity going on. on the contrary he might just be a bad traveller if hes snorting and his heart beat is up considerably and tghe heat could be exasibating it..if this is the case i would try travelling him with out a rug and if hes a fine build only put very light, breathable travelling boots on him. Also tryt travelling him with an experianced horse.

I don't want to blame your driving but my horse sweats up when dad drives but not when I drive, so just make sure you take it really steady. Other than that I agree that the heat will have some affect so keep as much air circulating as possible. If it is in her nature to be unsure of travelling then the more frequently you do it, the better she should be as it won't be such a stressful occasion (as stress causes sweating!)

One of the horses we travel with is as good as gold loading/travelling but sweats bucket loads whilst travelling. It literally pours off her

She comes off the lorry very calm and hacks really well! Just think its the way some horses are

The horse I had sweated when travelling in a lorry in winter.

She looked as though about 5 people had lobbed large buckets of water over her.

She's fine in a trailer and loads well in either, comes off calm as anything.

My cob sweats when travelling, he just gets hot, even in winter it's not often I can rug him in the trailer. Even my fine polo pony has been sweating lately when we take them out, definatly down to the summer humidity.

My friend's horse always sweats up when we travel him no matter what the weather is outside. He's never any the worse for it - we just have to remember to allow time to wash him off when we arrive.

I don't think its my driving

Ours always travel all year round with all the windows open, in summer no rugs at all, and a rug or two in winter. Although the rugs in winter are big (their duvets from the stable, too lazy to take them off

) they never sweat in them. Both horses are fully clipped most of the year though. I would rather have fresh air constantly circulating with a big thick rug than no rug and a stuffy horsebox.

I have to say though, I do feel 'mean' sometimes when I arrive at a show and everyone else is unloading in rugs and ours don't have any on - guess I'm just not 'cool' enough

I would travel with the windows open, and see how it goes. Mine probably sweated up for the first year or so in our box (didn't go out that often) and now is fine in our box. Took him out in a friends wagon where they have to stand facing backwards instead of side-on like he is used to and he was dripping wet (she drives maddeningly slow too

) when we got there. Two trips later and he is fine, no sweat at all, even on the very hot sunday we just had.

Probably will just take time to get used to it, wouldn't use a calmer - as long as they load and unload clamly and don't seem stressed I woulnd't think a calmer would help. Just maybe give it a bit more time?

thanks for all the replies, useful to read them through. Daisy doesn't own a travelling rug *hides in shame for being a cheapskate* so that isn't a problem.

I don't feel so terrible knowing that other people's horses sweat up as well. I'm hoping to take her xc schooling at Eland Lodge soon so I think we'll just allow plenty of time for her to cool off when we get there before I tack up. I'm going to try the windows open as well next time, I was worried that it would let more noise in and stress her but it was a bit sauna like in there when we got back yesterday so I'll definitely try it next time and just take it as trial and error. Yesterday was only the second time she has travelled in it so hopefully she will adjust and the heat won't be a problem when we're hunting this winter

My boy was sweating up terribly and shaking in my trailer but he seems much happier now I've taken out the partition and replaced with full width bars. I have the windows open and never put a rug on him (only a string vest if he's sweated up there and it's chilly).
Don't know what your van setup is but could you slide the partition over a bit in case he just needs a bit more room to spread his legs? Just a thought.

The windows should always be open, it helps alot. I have every window open even in winter!
The majority of horses sweat up, especially if they've not done much travelling.

Have fun at Eland- I love the course there!
